Customers thrown out of Royalty-themed tearoom (Daily Mirror)

Given a right royal marching order: Trio thrown out of fervent monarchist's tea shop after they refused to stand for the national anthem

The owner of a Royalty-themed tearoom explained today why she threw out three middle-aged customers who refused to stand when she played the national anthem.

Fervent monarchist Anita Atkinson, 55, opened the Royalty Teas shop in rural Stanhope, County Durham, to mark the jubilee celebrations with her friend Christine Dodd.

Mrs Atkinson, editor of the Weardale Gazette newspaper and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the County of Durham, was the Guinness Book of Records holder for the largest collection of Royal memorabilia and some of those items have been put on show in the tearooms.

Every 3pm, Mrs Atkinson asks customers to stand and then lets a young customer tap a helium balloon which then plays the tune of the national anthem.

She said: "The whole thing is quirky, it's a bit of fun and we decided that we should play the national anthem at 3pm.

"Some customers stand with their hands on their hearts like the Americans in this room full of Royal memorabilia.

"On Saturday I announced it, 'Ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding for Her Majesty the Queen'.

"They all did - including four teenagers - apart from three ladies who were looking a bit miserable.

"They were vociferous in their refusal to stand up so I asked 'are you not going to stand up?'

"One said 'I'm not standing' so I said 'will you just please leave then'. I was nice about it.

"One of them told me the coffee was rubbish and they talked deliberately through the national anthem. They were grumbling all the way out.

"The teenagers in the tearooms were absolutely shocked and one of them said 'that was a complete lack of respect by those ladies'.

"If the women had been leather-clad bikers or youths you would expect to call the police."

Mrs Atkinson understood not everybody loved the Royal Family like she did, but said: "If you don't want to stand for the national anthem, don't spoil the fun and don't come into a tearoom dedicated to the British monarchy."

The grandmother is running the tearoom with her friend as a community asset to bring in tourists to Weardale, and to thank the Queen.

She said: "It's a celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It's not a business, it is an event.

"I have never worked so hard in my life.

"Other people have parties, I have a tearoom.

"I have had people wanting to buy the concept of the business, but it's not about that."

The tearoom features masks, books, cut-outs of royalty and even thrones in the toilets.

Visitors from Germany, Spain and Australia have already enjoyed this corner of English eccentricity and the tearooms will remain open until the end of August from 10-4.30pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

Mrs Atkinson camped out for two nights to get a good view of the procession for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year

Iran's Greatest enemy today is Obama Not QE or UK anymore ...

by Darius Kadivar on

Obama ... Sorry BARACK HUSSEIN is the Mullahs Greatest Friend and Ally and will soon cut a deal with them over the nuclear issue thanks to all is "Democratic Liberal" Friends ...

If anyone is the Enemy of Iran and particularly the Iranian Monarchy today it's Obama and his Iranian Jomhurykhah lobbyists ( Trita Parsi and Co) and definitively not Queen Elizabeth 2 or the British People !

We have more in common with the British than meets the Eye ...

Definitively more than with the "Shah's of Sunset" on your West Coast who are turning you EYE RANIANS into a Charicature of anything our Great Country has Stood for in 25 centuries ...

Time to revise your obsolete judgment on the British who have equally contributed to world civilization, culture and the history of mankind,  including the language in which you just expressed yourself here.

Best,

Spain's Queen snubs Queen Elizabeth jubilee amid Gibraltar feud

Spanish queen cancels UK visit (bbc)

Queen Sofia of Spain has cancelled a visit to the UK to mark Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee because of disputes over Gibraltar.

A Spanish government statement said it was "hardly appropriate" for Queen Sofia, 73, to attend a lunch on Friday.

The UK and Spain have been in dispute over fishing rights off Gibraltar, a UK territory which Spain also claims.

Spain has also protested over a visit to Gibraltar by Queen Elizabeth's son Prince Edward and his wife Sophie.

The prince and the Countess of Wessex are to visit Gibraltar on 11-13 June as part of the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's reign.

The Sex Pistols protest song God Save The Queen is to be re-released 35 years after its debut, in time for the Diamond Jubilee in June.

The track, which featured a defaced image of the Queen on the original cover, was released during the Silver Jubilee in 1977 and was subsequently banned by the BBC.

Nevertheless, it entered the chart at number two.

The Sex Pistols' label, Universal, will also re-release the band's debut album.

Queen's 'rededication' vow for Jubilee (bbc)

The Queen has promised to "rededicate myself to the service" of the UK and its people as she celebrates her Diamond Jubilee.

In a speech to both Houses of Parliament, she said the commemoration of her 60 years on the throne was a chance "to come together in a spirit of neighbourliness and celebration".

The Queen also praised Prince Philip for his "constant strength".

A stained glassed window commissioned for the Jubilee was unveiled.

Hundreds of dignitaries, including Prime Minister David Cameron, his deputy Nick Clegg, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, assembled for the speech, which was greeted with a standing ovation.

The Queen responded to tributes made to her in both Houses of Parliament earlier this month.

Argentina to file UN Falklands complaint (bbc)

Argentina is to make a formal complaint to the United Nations about British "militarisation" around the disputed Falkland Islands.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner made the announcement at a meeting of MPs, senior officials, and veterans of the 1982 war Argentina fought with Britain over the islands.

Tensions between the two countries have been increasing in recent weeks.

Last month, the UK said it was sending a destroyer to the region.

The status of the islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, is still a highly sensitive issue for Buenos Aires.

Abba - Waterloo Lyrics

My my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender

Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way

The history book on the shelf

Is always repeating itself

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war

Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more

Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to

Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you

Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

My my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger

Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight

And how could I ever refuse

I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war

Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more

Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to

Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you

Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

So how could I ever refuse

I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - Couldn't be safe if I wanted to

Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you

Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you

A model Queen and an act impossible to follow

by anglophile on

Her Majesty the Queen Elisabeth II, has set the standards of monarchy to such heights that it must serve as the best example for the modern day monarchs to reach or follow. She has put the "duty" to her country before and above all else including her personal and family interests. In all her sixty years of reign, she has been the most decent, dutiful and democratic monarch. Queen Elisabeth II's reign is the best example of how monarchy can play a vital role within a fully developed democracy. The queen has demonstrated that in a country with deeply entrenched respect for law and freedom for her citizens as in Britain, the institution of monarchy is the keystone, the lynchpin and an insepearable asset of the British democracy. May she reign for many long and happy years. God Save the Queen.
