Definition of "police state"

by Nonbiased (not verified) on

Lets review the meaning of "police state"
Merriam-webster:

a political unit characterized by repressive governmental control of political, economic, and social life usually by an arbitrary exercise of power by police and especially secret police in place of regular operation of administrative and judicial organs of the government according to publicly known legal procedures.

Show of force?

Just look at small events in small countries and you will see that showing some historic uniforms and having police officers to avoid any chaos is not a show of force by the United States. This is not the united states military. this is history.Try to grasp the culture of where you live. every year a lot of American people who are mostly peaceful and educated participate in historic war fields to see the reenacting of those wars. We as Iranians coming form a real police state have a phobia toward police and military.we might even get palpitation if we see a police car.we need to realize this unreralistic fear and get over it.I had severl encounters with police here and everytime I have been impressed by their professionalism.Ofcourse there is also exceptions.thats all

another example of journalistic provocation

by Anonymous fish unregistered (not verified) on

how many clicks do you think this would get without the revised title? well, as it is, it didn't get that many anyway. JJ's intention, not necessarily his ONLY intention, is to get interest in iranian.com. how many articles do you see from him when things are hopping? not many. but when things slow down, he's posting several things to get your attention. it IS his job after all. you might not like, approve or trust it, but that's clearly way down on his priority list.

i personally don't agree in the journalistic power to change your intention but without spending time i don't really have investigating it, i guess we just will have to accept it.

fairbors. you continue to be an idiot. i doubt anyone would disagree that america still harbors resentment and racism but to call it a police state is the workings of a deranged mind.

i think iran would be a better example of a police state, don't you think?

Show of force? Hardly.

by Anonymous2009 (not verified) on

You have to expect a lot of security when you have 2 million people descend on a city for an event...

Show of force would be a lot more like what you see in places like Russia, or even Iran...

You do not see a huge parade of tanks, armored troop carriers, missile launchers, a couple of thousand marching troops, a huge air force fly over...

That is the show of force seen in other countries. Here you see more marching bands and a just the police necessary for security..

Show of force, what nonsense.

Headline * unregistered I hope it is not true

by Faribors Maleknasri M.D. (not verified) on

Looks like a police state to me!!!!! AND SO ON....
**But there is no sign of a police state to see. A police state does not show its nature so oppenly. I think it is for sure a show of force. In order to show the americans: see we are stil strong. But everybody knowes that if you make a PEKH to one of those pseudoheroes he will need a clean underwear. Mister
JohnJohn the respectable webmaster is right when he writes about the rules and laws of media.
However the united states o america IS in fact nothing else but a police state. Ask the inhabitants of harlem, Detroit, Texas and WDC. They will have a lot to complain about their police state and the police of their states.
Let us not forget the numerous black americans whop are killed by police of america.
Now the black jack as president should help the americans to forget the state`s crimes against blacks AND whites. In order making possible the intensifying the police methods against that nation. That jack has allready begann with work.
The main point and the cardinal question are: Why brings "IRANIAN" such Pics? Greeting

Headline

by Jahanshah Javid on

A little lesson in what to expect when submitting material for publication to any newspaper, magazine, ... editors can and will change anything they wish. That's their job. The golden rule of the profession is that they will make changes only within journalistic parameters. And they do not need to consult with or get the approval of the person who has submitted the material. These are not my rules. Check with any media editor, anywhere in the world.

The reason I picked "Show of force" as the headline for this photo essay was that the great majority are focused on the military or the security forces. There is not one photo of the inauguration itself. So the headline is not random or out of line, it represents what you see in the photos.

However, this does not suggest the U.S. is a police state. It just shows one aspect, one angle of that historic event. If iranian.com carried only these photos from inauguration day, then you could argue that it was biased and negative.

However other aspects were covered by these photographers:

* Salim Majd shot pictures of individuals:
//iranian.com/main/albums/i-was-there

* Morteza Loghmani concentrated on people, slogans and crowds:
//iranian.com/main/albums/pilgrimage-hope

* And Farrokh Khatami did another excellent photo essay on the day before the inauguration:

I hope it is not true

by nonbiased (not verified) on

I hope that it is not true that Iranian.com has changed the original title because I think that was a more appropriate title, not to mention that it was the photographer's choice. This is not a show of force by any means.

thanks for the clarification! unfortunately, the powers that be at iranian.com made a careless determination to change your title, thus implying a totally different intention. the inaugeral process has always involved the military. nowadays there is no doubt that safety of the president is paramount. but i also gotta say that the majority of this is purely patriotic, particularly in that they dress in period military attire.

it is, in fact, more symbolic than anything else. but very very cool.

hoping that i don't stray too far from your blog and DEFINITELY hoping that the anti-american forces don't show up in masse, i would love to be able to post a graduation ceremony of the Marine Corp.

If you are even the least bit American, it will absolutely "wet your eyes".

Point?

by Damon Jaan (not verified) on

Yes, unfortunately we still live in times when a strong military is needed. However, even with a strong military as the North had, a Southernor was still able to shoot The Great President Lincoln (point blank) and end his era of good stuff. Even with the strong military the early Muslims had Pirooz(of Persia) was still able to stab and kill the first Caliph. Lincoln had more bawls than most to stand up for whats right, dont take my word for it but look it up. But I too must ask, what is your point??? Russia, China, Germany, Iran, Israel, Egypt, etc. all have such traditions. So please tell us what is the point your trying to make.

"historic inauguration"

by Farrok K. (not verified) on

The title I chose for my pictures was "historic inauguration" not "show of Force"
the title of "show of force " chosen by Iranian.com not me!
I'm just a photographer, there are no hidden messages in these pictures.
I just love the arm forces and as you can see they all look great in their uniforms
these people were standing out door in sub zero temperature for almost 24 hours.

I don't get the point of this photo essay!

by farrad02 on

I'm sure there was a strong security presence, for obvious reasons. But by no means was this intended to implement a "show of force" type of message by the new, incoming administration!

What is your intended message from this photo essay? That the US has strong military or that Obama intended to put on a show of force?
