Deep Sky

Astrophotography

Once a month when the moon is in its new phase so it is darkest at night a group of us go out of town to image the night sky. Our favorite spots are the Anza-Borrego desert and the Palomar Mountains in Southern California. We image different types of objects including planets, nebulae, galaxies, star clusters and comets. Astrophotography as a hobby has advanced greatly in recent years since amateurs now have access to better telescopes and specialized astronomical cameras. These extremely sensitive cameras are b&w but are used in conjunction with a set of filters to produce color pictures. This is a collection of my images from the last couple of years. For more images you can visit deepskyobjects.com. -- Behyar Bakhshandeh

Speechless! Only if Jesus, moses, and Moe had see these!

They might have changed their minds. They are all mind blowing photos. My favorite is No.15! Are you sure you took these photos? I am sure, you are, but it is hard to beleive an amature atronomer can capture these.

How often do you get to see any of these stars shown here? How about if you go on top of mount wilson with one of your equipments, can you still see like this?

Thank you for showing me another way to spend my time than blogging here!

Yes Ari that was a supernova that went off in July of 2005. There is a site that reports them and you usualy only have a few days to catch it before they are too dim to see.

Incredible imagery.  I never knew that you could take such nice pics from your backyard with commercial telescopes.  These look like Hubble images!  Fantastic job!

Fantastic images. And a question.

by Ari Siletz on

Many thanks for these awe inspring images. I checked out your website and saw this interesting image sequence of a galaxy. Is what we're seeing a sun that went nova sometime between July 2004 and July 2005?

Fantastic photos, in my mountaineering days on the moonless nights we could see millions of stars at night and it was absolutely gorgeous, not to mention being high on the mountain tops was also just a great feeling. Thanks for the pix, brought great memories back.

I have used a series of different telescopes from Takahashi and Celestron and couple of cameras from SBIG.  On the website have I listed the specific telescope and camera used for each picture: deepskyobjects.com

I did not know you can capture deep space images from your backyard. I thought the Hubble® has been built, and sent out for that purpose. And I have heard that colors are sort of scientist-arstist rendition.

People say things...

Behyar, these are so amazing. Absolutely fantastic. You're a personal Hubble telescope! I have to join you on one of your star gazing outings.

Nothing turns me on like images of deep space. So much to be discovered. Infinite...

Wow...
