Photo essay: Vietnam: Traveling with friends in southeast Asia

by Lida Ghaemi
In early spring I traveled to Thailand, Cambodia (see "Cambodia with a Kiss") and Vietnam with two of my travel-buddies from Iran. Here is the first of three photo essays: Vietnam. I hope you enjoy them.

"feel their pain without any judgement."

by پندارنیک on

I only wonder if a Vietnamese monkey-worshiper  is ever inspired by her or his God to second-guess the belief system of others..........I wonder if a Vietnamese has ever mocked or ridiculed the wisdom of a Muslim who has to throw certain numbers of pebbles to an erected stone to ward off Satan in a barren desert.........If the answer to those question is negative, then I'd love to convert to their monkey-worshiping religion...

I highly value the tactful response that you posted here, Lida.

It is perfectly fine to worship monkeys, donkeys, or any other entity as long as such entities don't require a worshipper to do some killing or forced conversion, or allow the mistreatment of women or minorities.  Reminder that it is our [human] mind that creates any and all deities, be it allah, God, or whatever else.

I certainly hope that you are not into worshipping one of those Semitic [male] deities such as allah who seem to be horny, angry, and blood thirsty, not to mention a pedophile.

Thanks for all the feed back,  Number 41 is a lotus flower which they use the seeds for cooking. Also yes there is a strong sense of hardship, and poverty in their lives that would be hard to miss. As a touriset we just try to observe and feel their pain without any judgement.

Your photos gave me a nice sense about the Vietnamese lifestyle, nature, people and food. A good friend just returned from years of teaching there, so as I always thought, it is a must-visit part of the world. Thank you for sharing your views.

P.S. what is growing in #41?!

For once you wrote something that I agree with, no, I had a good laugh at :)

"Personal business must yield to collective interest."

Think Before You [Write] Act

by Raoul1955 on

Think before you write:
Can you actually 'get a sense' for what other folks [living near you] have experienced through life?  If so, then you are blessed with a rare ablity and I suggest that you write a book and make billions.

Yes, that coukd be your next assignment. Try talking about people in South East Asia when you get weary of Palestine.

Thanks for sharing your experience. So many "tasty" photos...  Vietnamese is one of my favorite cuisines, and it looks like you enjoyed it, too.

PS: and the beautiful old woman in no. 60 is my kind of woman. More power to her.

You've captured people and places with a loving eye. Real eye candy. Can't wait to post Cambodia and Thailand pix.

I only wonder...

...if it's possible for a tourist to get a sense of what these people have gone through...
