SchoolLibraryJournal.com: Usually graduates receive gifts—but 11-year-old Darius Atefat-Peckham decided to give one instead. He donated the $10,000 he won this spring in the Letters About Literature national writing contest to his elementary school library. "While [my school] gave me the gift of learning, it feels nice to give them a gift from me," says the 11-year-old from the Huntington, WV, about Meadows Elementary School, where he graduated last week. Reading has always been a true pleasure for the soon-to-be sixth grader, who spends a lot of time in his school library, staffed by beloved school librarian, Kitty Dawson, or "Ms. Kitty." He worked as a library helper during recess this school year and is thrilled that the $10,000 will go to the school and library >>>

Child of Pain
by Doorbin on Wed May 30, 2012 10:34 AM PDTIsn't this something ... Darius comes from a family struck by tragedy.
According to Wiki, his mother, "Susan Atefat-Peckham (August 12, 1970 New York City - February 7, 2004) was an Iranian-American poet. She and her son Cyrus were killed in an auto accident; her husband, Joel Peckham, mother, and youngest son Darius were hurt but survived."
Susan khanoom, har ja keh hasti, ravanat shad!
Well done Darius, you are an amazing example for me
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Wed May 30, 2012 09:40 AM PDTthankyou for showing me by example the strength I can develop of overcoming the selfishness that poisons my life and gives me only expectations and attachments. I am really proud of you and IC for sharing your example. You are the type of leader wise and gracious people follow. If you can maintain balance in your actions you will be a powerful hero.

He should
by Kabriat on Wed May 30, 2012 07:44 AM PDTShame on him. He should learn from Bita Daryabari and forced the library to call the grant the "Darius Atefat-Peckham donation" or requested that they create a section of the library the "Darius Atefat-Peckham wing" or hell have the entire library named after him!
In all seriousness. Thank God for the true selflessness of our youth who give, despite having nothing, for the sake of giving in contrast to the pure selfishness of the old who give, only when having everything, and expecting notoriety and recognition in combination with that giving.
Thank you Darius for giving me hope in our youth. Bita Daryabari could learn more than just one lesson from you about true philantropy and not the socialite - "look-at-me, look-at-me" - philantropy she exudes.
