Nader Babaei: Prisoner of the day

Sentenced to 6 years for "propagating against the state"

RAHANA: Ebrahim (Nader) Babaei is a nationalist civil activist, a veterinarian, and a disabled Iran-Iraq War veteran. He is also a member of the Zoroastrian organization, Anjoman-e Ashoey-e Iran, that is dedicated to reviving traditional Persian ceremonies.

Nader Babaei was arrested during the Ashura street protests on 8 January 2010 and was transferred to the Intelligence Ministry's Ward 209 at Evin Prison, where he stayed for close to three months before he was transferred to the prison's General Ward 350. Babai spent close to 11 months in detention, where his health deteriorated as a result of the disabilities he had sustained during the war as a result of exposure to chemical warfare. Nader Babaei was released on bail in December 2010. He was arrested again on 2 November 2011 to begin serving his prison sentence.

Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Moghisseh sentenced Ebrahim (Nader) Babaei to six years and nine months in prison and $3,000 cash fines on charges of "Assembly and collusion," "propagating against the regime," "disrupting public order," and "facilitating the escape of a suspect."

Along with other prisoners, Ebrahim (Nader) Babaei has been on several hunger strikes to protest the poor prison conditions and prisoner treatment. He was hospitalized and deprived from his visitation rights during the hunger strikes. Babaei suffers from acute back pain and a heart condition.

Dear  virtual family, please take a moment to send this protest letter or use your own version.

Please keep in mind that as we approach Noroz, and all the festivities,  for our magnificient, most brave political prisoners there will be no festivities, apart from their family members, deprived of the most basic rights inside jails of IR. Sending a letter would take only a few moments for us, but it would mean so much for them. Many thanks in advance, and a happy Chahar'shanbeh Sory to all.
