Kaleme: Hessam Firouzi, physician and human rights activist, began his 1.5 year prison sentence on Saturday, July 21, 2012, when he turned himself in to authorities at Evin Prison.
Over the past several weeks, Hessam Firouzi had been repeatedly summoned to Evin Prison to begin serving his term, though he had not been informed of the results of his appeal. When he appeared at Evin on Saturday, he was first informed that the appeals court had reduced his sentence to 1.5 years and then transferred to his cell.
Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Pirabbasi had earlier sentenced Firouzi to eight years in prison on charges of "acting against national security," "creating public anxiety," "propaganda against the state," and "assembly and collusion against the state." One of the reasons the court waged such charges against Dr. Hessam Firouzi was his efforts to provide medical attention to individuals arrested during the post-election events.
Hessam Firouzi was arrested on March 3, 2010 during the widespread arrests of human rights activists in Tehran, and was transferred to IRGC's Ward 2-A of Evin Prison. He was put under severe physical and psychological pressure during his interrogations to deliver confessions against himself on Iranian state television. He was released on bail of $100,000 on June 17, 2010.
Previously, Firouzi had been arrested in 2007 for his humanitarian work as a physician, and sentenced to 15 months in prison. He was released in May 2009. Firouzi helped Iranian political prisoners Ahmad Batebi, Akbar Ganji, Ayatollah Boroujerdi, and the late Akbar Mohammadi, and spoke to media about the mistreatment of these prisoners. These actions were the basis for his arrest and prosecution.

Bavafa jan, you're so correct in your points
by Zendanian on Sun Jul 22, 2012 10:46 AM PDTAnd at the same time it is so embarassing and offensive that a space that should be devoted to non-partisan defense of political prisoners in Iran, has been turned into a daily futile attempt to propagate policies that all political prisoners in Iran are opposed to.
Advocate of sanctions simply don't understand that such a policy just makes repression for mullahs in Iran easier.
What they also don't understand, is that so called "regime chgange" throught efforts of West in Iran will have the same result as "regime change" has had in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet another Islamic Republic, as in Islamic Republic of Iraq and Islamic Republic of Afghanisatn; both created by Western policy of "Regime change!!!"
What Iranian people are aiming for is an overthrowing of Islamic Republic of Hell, through our own resources and our own organizing efforts; no outside intervention is needed.

An injury to one is an injury to all.
For Hessam’s sake or Israeli's sake.....
by Bavafa on Sun Jul 22, 2012 12:45 AM PDTDo we think Hassam wants his family and innocent ordinary Iranians to be "starved" or their back broken?
I hardly think so.
Iranians of all walks of life taking a stand for their freedom and just rights. They are to be commanded and supported by all freedom loving folks.
Iranians need to stand united in their support for these brave souls, support their goals and aspiration for a free independent and prospers Iran.
Foreign nations which thru their apartheid policy practice the same insanity and unjust detentions cannot be a good example for the future of Iran and need not to apply.

Regime change for Hessam’s sake
by Fred on Sat Jul 21, 2012 11:52 PM PDTThe only way to end the 34 years of gross violation of human rights and crimes against humanity by the Messianic Islamist Rapists is regime change.
Backbreaking airtight sanctions plus air/naval quarantine is a must.
