Darius, You completely

by Babak K. on

Darius,

You completely missed my points.  When we talk about reading we mean the freedom to have access to different opinions and writings and criticisims and publications and books and so on with diverse ideas and opinions.  A dictatorship like Pahlavis and Islamic republic build a lot of institutions of higher education, but they do not allow access to the books or articles or writings that they do not approve.

Daius,

Kabul University was founded two years before the Tehran University and the Tehran Univeristy was only the renaming of the                   Dar-Ol-Fonoon (Please make a research on this) and mullas have built many folds of higher eduction institutions, yet we are not a nation of readers.  You know why?  The main reason is that if an article or a book or any litrary work is not approved by a dictatorship then we are not allowed to have access to it.

Reza Shah

Was necessary for Iran at that time. He was a gift from heaven to Iran and the best thing we had for a thousand years. Now he is gone and nothing will bring him back. We must honor him.

But we also need to move on. Reza Shah shrine must be rebuilt and his name honored. A holiday to honor him is proper. Nevertheless he is gone now and we need to move to the next chapter of our nation. I posted my ideas already.

You also make a great deal of good points. Iran had many chances for avoiding the 1400 year disaster.

  • First was the Mazdak revolution. He went too far.Trying to sleep with the Queen mother of Anushiravan was a terrible mistake tha brought the wrath of the young king. Anusiravan did place some amount of reforms. But Khorso Parviz ruined it all.
  • Mobeds had too much power and were very corrupt and deeply rotten. As was Salman Farsi

Post Sassanids we never had real good government except for perhaps Karim Kahn Zand. But his rule was based on personality not a system. When he died so did his compassion. It would have been nice if he had instituted a democratic system then.

Now we are here and need to reform. Forget the past now the Iranian population is by and large ready for democracy. The one thing that has happened is education. Most Iranians are literate and good enough to make their own choice. I don't want to debate the past. What do we do now? I would propose a Secular Constitutional Monarchy led by Reza Pahlavi. Where the real power is vested in a Prime Minister chosen by democratic election with a set term limit. Similar to Britain except for a term limit of say 10-12 year maximum. With a strong Bill Of Rights similar to that proposed by International Iranian Council. In 1979 we were not ready for democracy but now we are. Go for it and take the chance on freedom. *** the rest of naysayers we are good enough to be free now. How about it; no more arguments about the past we live NOW!

by darius on

How could you  make that  comment about Reza Shah? If he hated

reading and informed citizen, why did he  build university, encouraged women to go to school  and created an enemy that later his son paid for it?

Wasn't he hated and confronted by mullah because his  support  for modernism?

You can hate him but why do you change the historical facts?

May be we should have continued with shazde ha and their concubines ,Does that sound good?

Babak K.

Siavash You said that

by Babak K. on

Siavash

You said that Nehro wrote to his daughter:

" if you don't want to be surronded by any dictator, just read and read and read".   This is so beautiul.  But,

Dicators like Reza Shah, Shah, Khomeini, Sadam...do not allow the books that they do not like, or movies they do not approve and literature that is enlightening.  Dictators they decide about how we should think, talk write and read, and any deviation from their path is punished severely.  As soon you think and expres youreslf from the norm they define, then you are:

khaen, vatan froush, Todeee-bevatan (Shah used to call his opponents with this name, but he himself became a Be-vatan).  fetneh-ghar, Monafegh, mamoreh Estekbar, and....

The fundation of any democracy is reading but read what?            An Islamist, a Marxist and a Monarchist idea of reading is different from the one Nehro talks about.  I know that Saltanat-Talbs and Islamists don't think we the Iranian nation were and are mature enough to enjoy democracy, but We know that we deserve better and we will achieve it.  Pahavi's and Khomeinis belong to the trash can of history and free Iran is not too far away from us.

Remember that if a dicatorship can bring something good to a society, then a democracy can bring more of it , and better and less costly. I really think the Iranian revolution was a just movement to acheive dignity and greatness for our nation.  But, by then the Pahlavi dictatorship have taken away any  chance from us to mature politically and socially, and that is why so easily mullas stole our revolution. Today, the situation in Iran is the continuation of the Pahlavi dictatorship, and it is sad that Saltant-Talbs today are not taking any resposibilty for that and have not appologized to us the Iranian people yet.  It was the Zsar of Raussia that paved the way for the Bolshaviks to come to power in Raussia, and likewise, it was the Pahlavi dicatorship and their disregard for the Iranian constitution that brought the Mullas to power.

Democracy and Babak question

by Siavash300 on

"Any Western culture is 100's of years ahead of any Eastern culture in terms  of individulism and the respect to basic human rights." Babak

Have you ever asked yourself why? I think the difference is the level of education between western countries and east.

Sure, let's stay with India, as you wish. Now, there is a famous expression from Nehro to his daughter in his little book. The name of the book is "Namehay padari be dokhtarash". The letters from father to his daughter. It was best selling book in Iran back in 60's. He said " if you don't want to be surronded by any dictator, just read and read and read".

He also emphsized the value of education in developing democracy.

Now, let answer to question that why dictators always are afraid of books. First you have to describe dictator. whom you are referring to? what books, movie or literature you are referring to? what era you are discussing? is that France under German occupation during WWII? or Soviet during the time of Stalin? why Stalin didn't even allow capitalish plan travel over soil of Soviet in those days? or the resistance of french people against dictatorship of German or rather Hitler? So the question is very vague and doesn't specify where and what.

VPK is also pointed out good factor which is relgious factor in shaping people's mind toward democracy.

Siavash jan,I wish you

by Babak K. on

Siavash jan,

I wish you had a better exmple than Switzeland, because the example of Switzeland is kind of irrelevant to our dicussion.  In my arguements India was an example which is a lot more relavant than Switzeland to our discussion.  In fact even Example of Greece is irrelavnt to our discussion let alone the Switzeland.  Any Western culture is 100's of years ahead of any Eastern culture in terms  of individulism and the respect to basic human rights.  I know right now there are Iranian Aryanites, who will shove Koroush down our throat.  If you go to Takht Jamsheed you will see no statue of a woman, and there is an area labled as the place of Shah's Haram Sara, this itself shows in that time woman had no social status.  While in Greek historical sights you will find hundereds of women statues and how the the women were glorified. I think this a good comparison to show that why a country like Switzeland can be irrelavent to our discussion.  Iranians that I associate with are highly educated yet they know very little about Iranian history except what they have been fed by a dictatorship of any kind in schools.  The Iranians who are educated show very little interest in reading books, so very little chance to imrove their social and political (Be-daree).

I want to go back to my example of India and Gandi and in particular Nehro.  Gandi and Nehro and other hindu and muslem leaders inherited an India with extremely high illetracy rate among the population,  a nation with 10's of religions and 10's of languages and 10's of ethnici backgrounds, a nation infested with so amny diseases and illnesses, corruption and sectarian violence rampant among the masses, with the powerfull Communist  China as a neighbour and not to mention the constant Soviet threat.  Yet , the Indian leaders chose democracy, and today India is harvesting the fruits of the democracy and becoming a world power respected by the entire world.  Siavash, let us stay with Indian example because it is relevant to our discussion.  I just do not understand why an Iranian leader's income and wealth and all his bank accounts shouldn't be in public domain?  Why? Why?  If an Iranian leader is clean why he is so afraid that his belongings and wealth to be exposed to the public?

Siavash jan, you constantly talk about education then answer this question:

Why the  dicators always are afraid of books,  movies, litreture, and writings that they do not approve?  Why?

Democracy without education is a non starter waste of time. When people are so stupid to march for Khomeini they won't have democracy. Same will happen in Libya and Egypt. Maybe even Syria.

Iran is closer to being ready for democracy now that before. However to me freedom is more important than democracy. What is freedom? An start is what we had under the Shah. For one not having government control all parts of our lives. Not having religion pushed on us. In 60s and 70s a very small group was politically active. The rest wanted to live but were constantly agitated by that group. Reminded of every bad thing. While all good things were dismissed.

The trouble makers MEK; JM and Meli Mazhabi won. Because of ignorance of the rest and forign support. Thanks guys! Now they are spitting at each other and Mullahs rape and steal.

" It is never too early to have the system of check and balances, and hold the leaders of the country accountable" Babak

In Swiss, there is no political prisoner. They won't execute anyone for his/her sexual orientation. It appears there is a relationship between democracy and the level of education in Switzerland. Switzerland celeberated 300 years of it's university not long ago.

Now, you think with large crowd of uneducated people who can't even read or write their names we can have democracy.  How people can vote to Babak as their representative in parliment when they can't even write his name? How they will be able to know about Babak's agenda in parliment if they can't read his manscripts or understand his plan? I am sure those who went on the roof to see the picture of khomainie on surface of moon didn't have college education. Look with just simple trick illitrate people could be deceived. This is exactly what mullahs did in order to take power.

And what if I was? Don't we all have a right to our opinion. Should we just sit back and do nothing. Because anything we say will be twisted and turned by someone. Again best we may hope for is that this group is not representative.

You wrote :

Well, I see no relation between your questions and the subject we are discussing.  An egg to make an ommlette, or a ticket to go to see a movie are not  life and death situations , but democracy is, therefore, I find them irrelavent to our discussions

The education is helpful but is not necessary for democracy, for the following reasons:

1.  An education provided by a dictatorship can only serve the dictatorship.  The education approved by a dictatorship will bring no social or political enlightenment, it will only create more of the elitists who can only serve the the master and its interests.  Under Shah's regime an educator could not deviate form what regime imopsed on the educator, the same is true Under Islamic regime and any other dictatorship.

2.  It is never too early to have the system of check and balances, and hold the leaders of the country accountable.  A leader can be strong and hard working and a vissionary yet not above the law.  We need to follow the law of the land and there should not be any exceptions to the role.  Gandi inherited a poor country with very high illitracy rate, tens of languages, tens of religions, its people suffiring from all kind of diseases, and a communist China as neighbour and USSR as another threat, yet he did not make excuses to start a dictatorship.  And where is India today in world scene?  India is becoming a world power house, because Nehru Said  "What a dictatorship of any kind can create, a democracy can create more and better and less costly".

3.  Siavash Jan, why the dictators hate the books that they do not approve?

Thank you

I agree with your approach and suggestions in general. We have mini dictatorships all over. From the father at home to the boss at work or teacher in class. We all need to start changing ourselves.

In my home I allow the kids a vote on things that affect them. I never make a descision without asking them. It does not mean I obey them but their vote really counts. That is a start anyway.

We may try it here on IC. Stop telling others what they should think and be more open. Maybe willing to even change our minds if the other person makes sense! Democracy starts at home.

More about democracy. . .

by Siavash300 on

"The only part we may have  disagrrement is about eduaction.  We can not wait for college eduacted so that we can start demcracy. " Babak

Is it possible to make an omelette without breaking the egg first?

Is it possible to watch the movie in theater without buying the ticket first?

Is it possible to establish democracy without educating people first?

The answer to all above is "NO". Breaking the egg is prerequisite for making omelette. Buying ticket is pre-requisite for entery into theater to watch the movie and "Education" is pre-requisite for democarcy. Education is the most factor. There are other factors as well. Now, I just put my fingure on the most important one. Dear Babak, you go ahead and found some other factors that is necessary to built a democracy and let us know what are they. Let's work as a team. I did my part, you do your part. Let's VPK do his part too. (that is democratic approach).

We already discuss about family structure in Iran and the fact that father make all the decisions for the family and the rest of family members are followers. Let's move to the school system which is another institutition in Iran.

Mobser-e-class with ruler in his hand. He is usually physically stronger and biger than average student in the class. He makes decision about who sitting where. He also enforce who should "do" "what"  when the teacher is absent. Has Mobser ever asked the other students participation in making his decision? is he a team player like many western society? has he valued other student's opinion? has he ever shared responsiblity with the rest of the class like asking each student performs different task as a team?  the answer is NO. Again one person make decision for the rest of the class.

This is our "social context" or rather "social structure"  of our society. It has been shaped in a way to follow one person in the top. It could be Mobser class or father of the family or the any other authority.

Now, supposed we eliminate that specific person on the top such as Mobser-e-class or father. Is that finalize dictatorship. Of course, NOT. Dictatorship is not limited to one person. It is a system and it starts from each of us as an individual. It is within everyone of us. We have to recognize that "little dictator" within ourselves and deal with it. We can intelligently transform it to the democratic and free spirit by remembering these are just comments or rather opinions. Opinion never kill any one, people kill each other.  It is all starts from ourselves.

I don't think there will be any types of democracy in Libya.  There are many evidence including Group killing of Gaddafi loyalist, burring Gaddafi in a secret grave to prevent his loyalists crowd and establishment of an Islamic government.  Democracy is only possible if the first step becomes respecting women, kids and people orientation's as well as homosexuals rights.

I am glad that Western news didn't celebrate this time.  The title of one of the news was "No Rose for Libya in this spring".  We cannot have democracy by killing our own people or killing our own people by people from other countries.

Gaddafi has to be blamed in here since he couldn't modify his government towards a Islamic government, the most popular government in Islamic countries.  Or, he could educate Libyans by encourage Libyans to use a protection when listening to Islamic preachers.  Africans use one types of protection, but all Islamic countries have to use another types.  If a country topples by revolutionaries, the results are always a disaster.

Siavash Jan, I like what

by Babak K. on

Siavash Jan,

I like what you have said in your post, and I agree with most of it.  The only part we may have  disagrrement is about eduaction.  We can not wait for college eduacted so that we can start demcracy.

1. It is never ever too early to ask the authoriteis questions and hold them responsible.  For this we can not say Boz nameer bahar miad.

2.  It is never ever too early to have check and balances to monitor everybody who is in power, for this we can not wait so the nation is "eduacted".  If I am working hard and I am not above the law then nobody else should be an exception to the role.

3.  It is never ever too early to make it clear that, we the people are in charge and a leader is a servant.

3.  We the people should demand (uncompromisingly) to have complete information about the leaders income, and there should be comlete trasparency about all their holdings, bank accounts and their incomes.  Nobody ever dared to ask to see everything about Pahlavis income, and nobody dares to ask to see the documents about all Ayatolah's incomes.  When a British reporter asked Shah "they accuse you of having 20 billion dollars".  Shah responded : " can these people count?".  When Ayataollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was asked about the Forbes Magazine's report that "you are among 40 richest men in the world", he responded "if somebody can prove that we have so much money then they  can have all of it".  Well, Siavash jan both answers are unaccepatable and stupid.  We need complete and unconditional transparency about everybody income and (servat) who is in charge.

4.  Siavsh jan: Free press and freedom of speech are more importand than everything in order to bring progress and justice to a society.  Mostabeds can build streets (democracy can build more), Mostabeds can make bridges (democracy can make more), .....  There is no excuse or justifiction to postpone the free press, freedom of speech, freedom to criticize the leader.  Only the dictators and their lackies think that we should delay freedom.

This is one of your best posts and goes right to the point. Dictatorship is an endemic problem not just in Iran but in many places. In my family my American ex is always demanding kids obey her. I am saying kids get a vote.

We see it on IC.com as well. People do not like anyone who disagrees with them. It is a mentality that refuses to accept anything other than its own. Some people praise it as having integrity. But it is not so and ruins relations.

Babak's big mistake

by Siavash300 on

"My problem with any Estebdad is that all Mostabeds are stupid." Babak

Babak aziz, I see where the problem is coming from. Your thinking about dictatorship as one person in the top making decision for the whole people is wrong way of thinking. Dictatorship is not limited to one person. Dictatorship is a system, not individual. It starts from each person in the society, not as a whole. Each person has Estabdad in himself and it goes to the family as an small institutition and then to the work place and then all the way to the top of the country admininstration. How many times you get angry with some one whose opinion is opposed with you.? How many times you wanted to cut someone else head off because he has different view with you ? (just kidding).  How about the wife? how many times the wife's opinion in Iran society had been valued and counted? how about your siblings, means, how many times your brothers and sisters's opinion were counted in the family decision making?  How many times your father asked you your opionion in life as you were growing up? How many Iranian father valued their children's opinion when he was making decision for his family as these children were growing up? The hirarchy goes up to the work place. How many times the manager (moder) or the owner of the business ask or valued their employee's opinion in the work place? Modeer (manager) was the one who made decision, not employees. Father was making decision, not the children or even wife. In such a dictatorial system, how do you expect the establishment to act? plus the degree of education which is a greatest factor in making decision for the country. Now, tell me that I want to vote Babak K. as my representative in Majlis (parliment) but I don't know how to write his name. What should I do? That's simple. your response may come as: Ask someone else to write Babak's name for me. That is not what we are talking about it in here. Ask some one else or let someone else to make decision for me is absolutely dictatorial.

Sincerely,

Siavash

How come this enlightened nation got screwed by a 79 years mulla?

Because the nation was not enlightened. It was just beginning to get on its way. But we had a gang  of ungrateful an-tellectuals who did whatever they could to derail it. That is how. Plus a lot of manipulation by forign powers.

In addition a combination of:

  • JM - sore losers who refused to do anything good. Because their man lost. They stamped their feet!
  • Marxists - who thought "freedom" meant murder of modernists and blowing things up.
  • Islamists - who got had no problem with dictatorship. Just did not want modernity.

Thanks God there is one thing none of them are immune to. That is passage of time. Before long all the old guard will be gone and this sorry chapter will be history. Not too soon from my point of view.

Babak K. question

by Siavash300 on

"Whay do you think an Ahreeman like Khomeini so easily came to power?  The Pahlavi Estebdad never allowed us to read, to express opinions and learn about the truth" Babak K.

Khomeini cam to power as a result of our Ann tellectuals bad mouthing shah in any opportunity they could back in 70's. To be against shah was very fashionable. That was the sign of being bright and progressive in 70's. Just show that you're against shah so others will think you're smart. Only person who was writing in favor of shah in those days was a guy by the name of FARHAt GHAEM MAGHAM. The rest including Jalal Al ahmad, Simin Daneshvar, shariati, ......... all of those Khaens were writing against shah and provoking people agains shah in their writings. Even singers such as Daruish, Farhad with the song Seyahkal were portraiting heros against shah and his administration.

Babak is compalining of dictatorship. He doesn't even bother to take a look at the level of education in our country during Reza Shah the Great. The highest level of education was high school diploma till 1935 that Reza shah the great established Tehran University. The level of illerarcy was over 90%. That means only small percentage of our people even could read or write. Forget college education. Illiracy level was 85% to 90% back in 50's. Sepah Danesh (the troops of education) were sent to small villiages and remote area in our country to educate people. That was one of the principles of White revolution. As a result illiteracy rate dropped to 45% in late 70's. That means half of our population still couldn't read or write in late 70's. Speaking of dictatorship? In those days Swiss celebrated 400 years of establishment of their university. Even with all shah and his administration deligent effort to fight against illiteracy still many people saw Khomainie's picture on the surface of moon in 1979. Education is the first step toward democracy and illimination of dictatorship. When person can't write his/her name some one else should do it for him/her. Some one else should make decision for him/her.  Padeshah was a father of the nation throughout Iran history. I am surprised Babak dosesn't see it.

Letting Khomeini to express his opinion freely would have exposed him very well, becuase the Islamists like Monarchists and Marxists are very good in spitting upward and khomeini was not an exception.

You forget that despite Khomeini was banished in Iran he was able to broadcast his speaches via the BBC and his sermons and opinions were widely defusedin Iran. Most people who rallied round Khomeni like the fool Bazargan  believed his nonsense that he would grant freedom and allow secular liberals to govern Iran. Khomeini lied for years and yet the Jeppe Meli and the assortment of Lefty groupies hailed him as their champion. They believed him and never once asked the question how is it possible that a Shia Islamist would ever accept a secular democracy.

The Shah should have lodged a bullet in Khomeini's mouth years ago and took him the Tower of Silence for wild ravens and vultures to wipe his bones clean. That was one of the worst mistakes the Shah made and which Iran is paying in blood for.

First of all much of the negative connotations of the term 'dictator' is very much a late twentieth century ivention. Indeed, some of the prime ministers in the twntieth centurty actually preferred the title 'dictator' (farmandar) and only afterwards they adopted the term Prime Minister or President because it went out of vogue.

If you hate dicators then would you also hate Cyrus the Great who also killed, fought wars and conquered the Medes to unify Iran? Do you think this was done peacefully? The Iranian standard in your avatar did not come by an accident or peaceful revolution such as Ghandi's? Woudl you condemn the Achaemenians? Do you condemn Mossadegh for overs-stepping his mark and giving himself emergency powers based on a dody plebicit which gave him a 99.9 percent approval in Tehran? Where was Fidel Castro in your list of dictators? Did you the Dalai Lama of Tibet was also a dictator and there was no parliamentary dictator? Will you be willing to call the Dalai Lama a dictator if you met him? PLEASE think for yourself and not wait for Noam Chomsky to give you his seal of approval first. YOU MAKE NO SENSE WHATSOVER.

Can you please describe your academic credentials before you dismiss a book like Cyrus Ghani as being a lie? Have you even read this book which is published by a prestigious publishing house by I.B. Taurus. You show the same attitude of Ayhatollah Khomeini who  issued a fatwa on Salmon Rushdie without probably even reading his book? Have you ever written a scholarly work of any kind?

The truthseeker,

I could not agree with you more.  The  supporters of the past and present dictatorships are so similar,  it is so amzing.                        Good day my fiend

The difference between Reza Shah and Mohamad Rezah Shah at one hand and Khomeini in the other hand is the difference between the Ess-Hal and You-Boo-Sat.

You speak with such eloquence and respect that I want all to hear you. By God your own words are fine "tofe sar bala". I agree that once Shah decided not to kill Khomeini he should have let the guy speak. Just to expose how stupid Khomeini was.
