pen.org: PEN American Center has named Nasrin Sotoudeh, a writer, lawyer, and leader of the women’s and children’s rights movement in Iran, as the recipient of its 2011 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award. Sotoudeh was arrested on September 4, 2010, and is now serving an 11-year sentence for her outspoken advocacy in defense of her clients arrested after the June 2009 presidential elections and interviews she gave to human rights organizations and media about their cases. “Nasrin Sotoudeh not only embodies the spirit of the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award, but also the spirit of this remarkable year,” said Kwame Anthony Appiah, president of PEN American Center. “As a writer, as an activist, and as a lawyer she has dedicated herself to a simple and powerful idea: the principle that the rights guaranteed by law are absolute and shared equally by all.” >>>

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Thu May 05, 2011 05:39 PM PDTHer Name, Her Safety and well being, and her causes are being championed by people of all walks of life in Iran, so that our children do not have to live in the world that we live in today.
In her case, she gives prestige to any award given to her, not the other way around. She has a heart of Gold and most people can see this.
Great choice!

Nasrin Sotoudeh will be in our hearts and on our minds
by Reality-Bites on Thu May 05, 2011 02:44 PM PDTtill the day she is freed and beyond.
Sadly she is not in a position to accept this richly deserved award herself. But one day she will be. And, as Bavafa said, the more pressure that can be brought to bear on the cruel and intolerant despots that hold her prisoner, the sooner that day will arrive.
