Mohammad Seddigh Kaboudvand: Prisoner of the Day

Kurdish Journalist and Human Rights Activist

Committee to Protect Journalists: On July 1, 2007, plainclothes security officials arrested journalist and human rights activist Kaboudvand at his Tehran office, according to Amnesty International and CPJ sources. He was being held at Evin Prison in Tehran. Authorities accused Kaboudvand, head of the Human Rights Organization of Kurdistan and managing editor of the weekly Payam-e-Mardom, of acting against national security and engaging in propaganda against the state, according to his organization’s website. A Revolutionary Court in Tehran sentenced him to 11 years in prison.

So sad, depressing ... especially as he is so ill. Are there any petitions? What can we do?

Shifteh Ansari

Kaboudvand a Nasrin Sotoudeh client

by Shifteh Ansari on

Mohammad Sedigh Kaboudvand was represented by Nasrin Sotoudeh, before she, too, was arrested herself. Kaboudvand is one of the most respected human rights activists in Iran. He has not been allowed furlough despite his deteriorating health.

This is what Sotoudeh had to say about Kaboudvand's case in 2010, a couple of months before she was arrested:

"I dare say that the most difficult conditions ever imposed on a prisoner have taken place for Mr. Kaboudvand, to the point where the harsh prison conditions have caused him to have three strokes and heart attacks. These conditions are considered dangerous conditions for a prisoner and according to Prisons Organization procedures, this prisoner must be immediately released to pursue medical treatment. But it seems that his life is deliberately endangered. Even if there was evidence supporting the existence of the Kurdistan Human Rights Defense Organization, this action is not a crime by nature. Naturally, establishing a human rights NGO cannot be considered a crime by law. This is one of the ‘miracles’ of the Islamic Republic to call this a crime,” Sotoudeh told the Campaign regarding her client’s charge and his conditions."

Prisoner of the Day

I like the title. They need more reminder and attention than Iranian of the Day because they are front line warriors of this war against this evil. As long Islam is ruling Iran, that can be a job security for some one to write about them.

I wish better life for them and their family after passing through this dark tunnel.
