My sincere condolences to all Iranians for losing such a national treasure!

What a shame that nobody from Pahlavi family sent their public condolences. Many years ago Mr Shafa criticised Prince Reza, it seems he has not managed to forget nor rise above it and offer his condolences. Not trait of a true prince and even less trait of a democratic soul. But then again what do you expect from a man who preaches democracy but cannot take any criticism and moderates his website. He cannot run a website in a democratic fashion and at the same time preaches democracy.

I hope that there is a critical mass of informed and intelligent people in Iran to one day soon be able to achieve true democracy on their own accord and according to their own terms.

در دفاع از درستی، فرزانگی و وارستگی این بزرگ مرد تاریخ ایران همین بس، که مداحان دشمن وی را خودی نمیدانند و  فرزانگی اش را نمی شناسند. جیره خواران بی بی سی قیاس به نفس میکنند و هر آنچه لایق همکیشان شان است به آزاد مردان و فرزانگان ایران زمین نسبت میدهند.

a great literary mind

One who showed us and the world that his intellectual prowess surpassed all the negative hype surrounding him.  He was a great author and schoalr and showed me and millions like me that Islam was is and will be the number one threat to human civlization.  We shall try to annihilate it one step at a time and the one step starts with Persia,  I loved his writings.  May he rest in peace

BBC'c own obituary seems to have been buried under heaps of anger and fantical spite towards the man.  I wish they allowed comments under their articles. 

For everyone who is now aware and proud of ancient Iran and the Cyrus Cylinder as a symbol of respect for human rights you can thank Shafa.

As for his writings about Islam, there is a lot of truth in what he writes and contrary to BBC's claims there is plenty of 'scientific' backing for his ideas on the origins of the 3 monotheisms and the influence of pre-Islamic Iranian religions.

زوزه‌های بی‌ اثر بی‌‌بی‌سی و جعلیات بی‌ ثمرش

یکی‌ از مظاهر نو ظهوران و خادمان جدید بی‌ بی‌ سی‌ فارسی‌ همانا کم سوادی و یا بهتر بگویم بی‌ سوادی این نو باوگان عرصه رسانه عمومی‌ است. زمانی‌ بود که ادبا و فضلایی نظیر مسعود فرزاد یا مجتبی مینوی برای دولت فخیمه قلم فرسایی میکردند. دریغا که حتی فنّ شریف خدمتگزاری هم چون فنون دیگر دستخوش حرمان گشته است.  

اگر صدا و سیمای رژیم اسلامی می‌خواست در رثای شخصیت والایی نظیر شفا جعلیات متشر کند بهتر از بی‌‌بی‌سی نمیتوانست انجام دهد. لحن انتقام جویانه بی‌‌بی‌سی که همواره می‌خواهد شفا را خدمت گذار شاه و دربار جلوه دهد و نه عاشق و خادم ایران و فرهنگ ایران خود مبین زخم عمیقی است که هنوز پس از گذشت بیش از سه دهه از افشا گری نقش بی‌‌بی‌سی در کمک به روی کار آوردن خادمان دیرینه دولت فخیمه یعنی‌ ملایان زوزه‌هایش به گوش می‌رسد. مرحوم شفا در اثر جاودانش (از کلینی تا خمینی) از تاثیر خدمات خادمان سابق یاد کرده است.

 
بی‌‌بی‌سی آنقدر حسود و نظر تنگ است که حتی حاضر نیست که قبول کند مرحوم شفا ۱۴۰۰۰ جلد کتاب کتاب خانه خودش را خوانده است و از روی استیصال به حساب و ضرب و تقسیم روی می‌‌آورد که نشان دهد این ادعا ممکن نیست. در جای دیگر نویسنده بی‌‌بی‌سی حمله به اسلام ستیزی شفا می‌کند و یا می‌خواهد از دید تنگ و کم عمق خویش شفا را به زعم خود دو رو نشان دهد (نامه به خامنه ای) و این را نفهمیده که مرحوم شفا با انحراف دین و ابتذال آن در دست دوستان بی‌‌بی‌سی، ملایان، شاکی‌ بوده و نه از اصل آن.

بی‌‌بی‌سی فارسی احتیاج فوری به بالا بردن سطح سواد مجریانش را دارد. فقط سرو صورت این خادمان را بزک کردن دردی را دوا نمیکیند.

به یاد دوست فرهنگ ایران

من کتاب خواندن را با ترجمه زیبای شجاع الدین شفا از نغمه های شاعرانه لامارتین آغاز کردم. هفته ها و ماهها من غرق در خواندن ودوباره خواندن این اثر زیبا و رویاهای نوجوانی خود بودم. از آن تاریخ تا کنون بیشتر نوشته های او را خوانده ام. او به معنای واقعی یک نویسنده و روشنفکر بود که شاید روزی روزگاری مردم ما قدرش را بدانند. به ایران و فرهنگ این سرزمین نفرین شده خدمت فراوان کرد. یادش گرامی باد.

His mastery of Persian

His mastery of Persian writing is unmatched. I should have noted it in my first comment.

Sad fails to describe...

Yet we lose another great Iranian. His vision must be held so close and dear to our hearts, his thoughts must guide us through this rough patch of our history.

If my body dies, let my body die, but do not let my country die.

It was 1983.

I was in a German refugee camp.

We were thinking, the IRI won't last. In a year, or two, we'll be back.

Back then, there were some rich Iranian opposition newspapers published in Europe; Iran va jahaan, Ghyaameh Iran,..etc.

Mr. Shafa's much anticipated Tozeeh-ol-Masaael was published. The price was about $50, and I didn't have any money.

I wrote the publisher, if there is any discounts for students, or refugees.

Sadly,they wrote back, there were none.

A week later, I received the book, along with a note: Mr. Shafa had heard about my request, and had decided to send me the book, as a personal gift.

I cherish the note, and his memory, for the rest of my life.

I never got the chance to thank him personally :-(

A true master in.......

I did send his book (tavalodi digar ) to one of my friend in Iran  just to let them know the truth about all religions.

Great loss

I had some confrontation in the past with his 'Iranian nationalism' concept. A culturally driven concept which has disastrous repercussion when applied in politics. And politics, as always, and as  it does for everybody, obscured my view to see the greatness of this man. May he rest in peace.

An irreplaceable loss

He was the most astute chronicler of the Persian history and the Islamic influence in Persia. His words in an interview given many years ago to a  Persian radio station, is worth remembering:

"Woe to a nation [Iran] that should start her second millennia with Shah-Nameh and ends it with Touzihul-Masaael."

A big loss

I am just wondering if his family is capable enough to handle a secular funeral. Unlike those of late Reza fazeli who had  publicly denounced religion, or late Mahasti who had converted to Christianity but a secular, or a christian funeral was denied respectively.
