TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran gained the upper hand against its old foe the United States in the sporting arena on Thursday, winning most medals in a wrestling contest that coincides with talk of a possible thaw in bilateral ties. Six U.S. wrestlers are taking part in the two-day Takhti Cup at Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) sports complex, together with athletes from Cuba, Iraq, Turkey and other countries. The first two Americans to enter the competition lost their opening matches against Iranian opponents, drawing loud cheers from a small but enthusiastic crowd in the 12,000-capacity indoor stadium.

Iran vs. US.A. wrestling

If the two countries really want to improve relations...
by farrad02 on Fri Mar 13, 2009 01:23 AM PDTIf the two countries really want to improve relations, then how come Obama just extended the sanctions against Iran and the Mullahs in Iran just turned down an offer by the Turkish government to mediate between the two parties?
I think the main road block is that radicals on both sides do not want a rapproachment and are sometimes even working in concert to prevent any steps towards a dialogue! The radicals in the US and in the IRI both benefit from the continuation of hostilities and even an armed conflict!
The radical fundamentalists in iran need another war to keep the country in revolutionary uproar, have an external boogie man to blame for all of their shortcomings and to justify the supression of any democratic aspirations in Iran.
At the same time, the conservative power-hopefuls and the pro-Israel paranoids in Washington would prefer to have the likes of Ahmadi Nejad under the leadership of radical Mullahs like Khamenei!
I was really hoping that Obama's election put all of this B.S. at least on hold for a while! Apparently not! Apparently President Obama is going to have to follow the same old failed policies for now!
Dear IranianAmerican ...
by iranianAmerican (not verified) on Thu Mar 12, 2009 11:28 PM PDTWhat Americans like the rest of the world see on the news is the portrait of Iran projected by the IRI. Hostage taking, shouting of “Death to America” in every gathering, lack of human rights, lack of women rights, lack of freedom, the exporting of terrorism all over the world, pursuit of nuclear weapons, and ballistic missile technology.
Every American I know says “Iranians are the nicest people I've ever met”. Why is this so surprising to you? Everybody who meets Iranians without the IRI mask comes to the same conclusion.
PS: I would be more concerned about regaining our old respectable position in the international community. Don’t wary about the Zionist; they will love the new Iran too.
Thank you for promoting good will!

by Anonymous... (not verified) on Thu Mar 12, 2009 03:27 PM PDTIranian wrestlers are really fantastic, though I also can't help but credit Sammie Henson's big heart and sportsmanship as yet another instrumental factor behind the humility and grace that our American wrestlers demonstrate toward Iran.
Just incase, Sammie Henson is a former olympic medalist who won the world championship title in Tehran back in either 98 or 2000. He is now coaching at Cal Poly. A joy to watch as a wrestler and it's just as fun to watch him in action as a coach.
Long live the friendship of Iranian and Americans
