point well taken. I didn't mean that Islam itself is dying in Iran, in fact a good number of Iranian youth who were born after the revolution do follow some of religious "duties" like namaz v roozeh much more seriously than our generation. That unfortunate effect is going to take much longer to fade.

What I meant is that the "political Islam" to the degree that it defined the revolution, is becoming redundant. And again, this is only true as far as internal struggle is going on. That is, with revolution goals maturaing a bit, and the security felt against external threats, leaves room for other aspirations of the Islamic revolution. I think of Islamic revolution as a two sided coin, one side is a typical "western type revolution" like French or Russian revolutions , with equality, democracy and freedom on its agenda, the other side of the coin is the anti-colonial strong undercurrent of that revolution which is independence from foreign yoke. Without the latter, you could not have the former. What I am saying is that Islam was the unfying force which gave the latter its cohesion. The independence of Iran now being more secured, you see the other side of the coin which is more defined by class divisions and as such not only it doesn't need political Islam, but in fact it requires it to fade away; fade the massive entanglement of Islam with government which was an offspring of anti-colonial side of the coin, yet it has produced a privileged clerical class!

That's why I think Ghafari has it backwards!

But, regionally, I agree with you that political Islam and Iran is going to remain as THE model for independence, and the western countries are learning that they can not fight that indefinitely. That is the other reason that I believe the US HAS TO and WILL approach Iran as an independent country and with mutual respect finally. It tried the colonial relation and was defeated many times and all the effort to reverse Iranian revolution in the past 30 years has failed. Policy subsequently will change as no one can ignore Iran ay longer.

My understanding was that Iranian of day means someone who caught attentions and headlines or caused a difference not Hero of the day! As if when strippers been called iranian of the day they were supposed to be heros or something

I remember Time once has Khomeini as man of the year and many others but that didnt mean they thought he is hero

I think some jump the gun and read too much in to comments and statements.

You are making an excellent point here; the opposing faction in the current uprising is really part of the same regime.  They are composed of the same thugs and murderers that tortured, executed and otherwise displaced hundreds of thousands of Iranians.

I believe that the infighting amongst the mullahs will eventually lead to their demise.

BTW, Yazdi is another element of the IRI even though he's had a falling out with Khamenei.  He was directly involved with the execution of numerous Shah era civil servants without a due legal process. It's funny how (in this video) he's tryring to dissociate himself with the mullahs.

David ET

Dear Nilo

by David ET on

I did not give 100% stamp of approval to no one and actually I never have. Even my belief in God is not 100% but then the God I believe in is understanding and doesn't want my belief any other way either!

Problem like I have always said among many is that that I think we should get out of this rigid, all or nothing mentality or we will continue keep ending up with the : nothing. We can not remain as individual ponds and expect an ocean.

In different historical cross sections different forces find common goals.

I made a comment about a speech that this man gave . It takes guts to stand up and say something like that living in Iran to the supreme leader no matter who you are. Rest assured I will cheer you you or Irandokht if you ever give same speech in Iran also.

I also do criticize when I feel needed. I can support Mousavi as a presidential candidate (of the Islamic Republic) and still criticize his performance post election. I can vote for Mousavi but support Karoubi's positions after the coup and at the same time be for a secular republic. I can support Obama as candidate and president as a whole but criticize or support his individual policies.

I have criticized NIAC past and I support their call to end the government crackdown: //www.niacouncil.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1458&Itemid=2

I have supported Shirin Ebadi but questioned some of her positions earlier days (which she changed later.)

I do not believe in anything or anyone supreme and absolute .

I encourage what I see positive and discourage negative

The ones who believe in all or nothing are the ones who need to explain themselves: the hezbollahi's, rajaviollahi, shahollahis. obamaollahais (and yes there are plenty of them too) and I-ollahai's....

I have no claim to anything or any posts and simply express my views and try to remain open-minded . I am criticized everyday for my views and I reply , agree or disagree and respect them enough to respond to almost all of them and I welcome them

If ONE THING I am hoping to accomplish here is an example that we should not be extremists and absolutist.

I even wrote an open letter to Reza Pahlavi and suggested if he drops his claim to the better blood and family permanency I and many would support him also.

Unity in common goals and ability to also accept differences and critics at the same time is what I propose and try to practice.

I am against absolutism and extremism and for democracy in action and not just a idolized concept sitting in our bookshelves.

I prefere Ghandi to Jinnah but I like what he said:

"If you change your past and work together in a spirit that everyone of you, no matter to what community he belongs, is first, second and last a citizen of this State with equal rights, privileges and obligations, there will be no end to the progress you will make"

and at the end I apologize to anyone that I might have ever offended here on this site.

FYI/Execution of Hoveyda by Cyrus KADIVAR (hoveyda.org)

by Darius Kadivar on

Excerpt from Article:

Hoveyda’s Tragic Fate By Cyrus Kadivar - 23 DECEMBER 1999/LONDON/UK

EXECUTION OF A STATESMAN

"The second session of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran began on 7th April 1979 at 2:30pm with the reading of the Koran. Before his trial, Hoveyda was blindfolded and brought out of his cell in Qasr prison and taken to a room where he rested for a few minutes. After lighting his pipe Hoveyda was escorted into the courtroom. On that spring afternoon Hoveyda was wearing a pale trouser and a suede coat and had a downcast expression when he faced the tribunal. Hoveyda tried to be as calm as possible exchanging pleasantries with members of the Court. "Seeing you smile gives me great courage," he told one of his judges. The courtroom was overheated and a revolutionary guard helped Hoveyda out of his coat before seating him in the designated chair. A photograph taken at his trial shows him uncomfortable in a white sweater. Ayatollah Khalkhali, the presiding judge, repeated the charges against the Shah’s faithful prime minister. Because the proceedings were kept secret it is not clear how Hoveyda defended himself. Finally, Hoveyda was asked if he had a final statement. "I have nothing to add to what I have already told the Court," he said. "You tell me not to go into details...But I ask the youth who have been tortured by SAVAK to pardon me. Even I was arrested and imprisoned by SAVAK. If life permits me I shall write my memoirs." Khalkhali then asked if there was anything else he wanted to add to which Hoveyda said that he did not. At 5:35pm the prisoner was taken out of the room. As Hoveyda awaited the verdict an Iranian reporter met with him and interviewed him for eight minutes. "What are your feelings about the sentence which will be passed and what do you expect it will be?" asked the reporter. "I don’t care what sentence I will receive," Hoveyda said. "Fortunately, I am imprisoned by Muslims and I am confident that Islamic Justice will prevail." The reporter asked if he considered himself innocent. "No, I don’t consider myself innocent," Hoveyda replied. "I accept full responsibility for my government." Before leaving his cell, the reporter asked Hoveyda if he had any final wish. "Yes," Hoveyda replied. "I am interested in studying different things. During my lifetime I have never gone to sleep at night without first reading a book. Of course, here in prison, I have access to all types of books. I have read all of them. Perhaps you could ask them to bring me another collection!" It was 6:05pm when a panel of seven judges found Hoveyda "guilty" and voted that he be executed. Immediately after the death sentence was pronounced, Khalkhali rushed around the prison ordering all the doors to be locked and the phones disconnected. Within minutes, Hoveyda was dragged out of his cell and driven to the prison yard. In his numerous interviews, Ayatollah Khalkhali boasted that the Shah’s prime minister had offered him a million dollars to extend his life for six more months. Hoveyda was tied to a metal ladder and shot. The first bullets hit him in the neck but did not kill him. He was ordered by his executioner, a mullah by the name of Hadi Ghaffari, to hold up his head. The next bullet hit him in the head. At the time of his murder Amir Abbas Hoveyda was 53. His corpse was then trucked to the city morgue where it was photographed with a few grinning militants standing over him with their automatic weapons. Hoveyda’s body was buried in a secret location."

Ebrahim Yazdi Mentions a Mullah who killed Hoveyda but refuses to mention his name:

by Nilo Siavashi on

David, I like some of your writings but one thing that I am curious about is that you seem to be nicer to a person like "Hadi Ghaffari" than you are to IRANdokht.  You criticize IRANdokht over small differences in opinion but now, you give your stamp of approval to a person with a very dark history.  I think you owe readers of IranianDotCom an explanation.

Ghaffari

by Teym (not verified) on

Good comment about Hadi Ghaffari. But I read that when they walked out of the tribunal room, ( Khalkhali, Ghaffari & Hoveyda), Ghaffari who was stearing at Hoveyda all through out tribunal, shot him in the neck in the hall way. Then Khalkhali shot him in the head. Also in his memory book, Khalkhali says he kept the revolver as a souvenier.
Khalkhali got away from justice. Hopefully Ghaffari will not.

Ghaffari

by Teym09 (not verified) on

This is the guy who shot Amir Abbas Hoveyda. Ghaffari was one of the participants in the court / tribunal room once Hoveyda got convicted guilty. He was steering at Hoveyda the whole time in the tribunal. Once the tribunal was over & they walked Hoveyda outside, Ghaffari walked with them, along with Khalkhali in the hall way, then Ghaffari shot Hoveyda in the neck. Hoveyda goes down and as laying on the ground, he says to Khalkhali: finish me, (rahatam kon), then Khalkhali shoots him in the head with his revolver.
This guy its not a reformist. He just doesn't like Khamenei

Death_To_Fascism

The irony, the irony, the irony!

by Death_To_Fascism on

Remember this is the same Hadi Ghaffari who founded the Ansar-e Hezbollah! This guy is a murderer bar none, second only to Sadiq Khalkhali who also became a "reformist" during Khatami's presidency just before he died.

The more one sees such back-flips by "reformed" mullahs, the more one is convinced that all this is a dirty factional in-fight within the system and nothing to do with the people whatsoever. The people are just being used as convenient pawns by these long-time murderers, thieves and looters in their own territorial shit-fights for who gets to control the loot!

The more Hadi Ghaffaris come out and start denouncing Khamenei and Ahmaghinejad, the more it all looks like a giant puppet show to me. None of these people is remotely interested in overthrowing the Islamic system that is the actual core of the problem in the first place.

Goor-e-babaye Hadi Ghaffari va Ansar-e Hezbollah!

Someone should ask Haddi Ghaffaree about his role in the superssion of demonestrators on the 30th of Khordaad in year 1360 and after.  How many of them were killed by his suporters and under his direct command?  What was his role in attacking those at Tehran University when Bani Sadr was delivering s speech in favor of Mosaddegh?  When his father had become Aayatollah'ol Ozamaa?

Thanks
