WWII: Persian Gulf Command

American servicemen in Iran during World War II

The is a slideshow depicting everyday life for the American servicemen of the Persian Gulf Command stationed in Bandar Shapur, Iran during World War Two. The PGC was a transportation unit responsible for unloading Liberty ships from the USA and transshipping their cargoes, mostly disassembled trucks and some airplanes, to Russia through the "back door".

The images are from an extensive collection of slides taken by Captain Walter Peach, one of the company commanders. These particular pictures are somewhat more personal than most, but give a good sense of the conditions in Iran and proof of the fact that a military takes its homeland's culture with it where ever it goes!

The carnival event was apparently a special multi-national soiree featuring Russian ballet, belly-dancing, concessions, and horse-racing with local horses and riders.

This being the Forties, the US military was segregated with all the officers and some of the non-coms being White. That's just the way it was.

Re: ngiyaxolisa

No thanks, I don't need your help ngiyaxolisa. However, I do think that the Iranian public should know about what these soldiers and their countries did in my country.

Switzerland and Spain were also neutral countries but they were European, so their territorial integrity was respected. Iran is a Muslim Middle Eastern nation. That is why the Europeans and the US did not give a damn about invading and abusing it's population.

Same thing goes on today. The West still doesn't give a damn about Iran and Iranians.

Cease your politiking,

by ngiyaxolisa (not verified) on

Cease your politiking, suomynonA. When I put together this slideshow I had no intention to "report" on anything at all. I only wished to share some images captured sixty-five years ago of a small area of Iran as viewed through the lens of one man's camera. If my humble effort has brought some entertainment or even pleasure to any viewer, be he of Iranian, European, Chinese or whatever descent, then it was worth the time and effort. If you would rather see images of people burning to death in barrels of hot tar, I'm afraid I can't help you.

Not the whole story

by suomynonA (not verified) on

Before we all get interested in the 'Allied' troops in Iran, we should realize that these were invaders. They invaded a country, our country Iran, that was called neutral at that time.

Also missing is the report that the Allies sinking three of Iranian warships and other killings and destructions during their invasion.

Also missing is the report of atorcities commited by some of the US servicemen against the Iranian population in some southern cities. If you get to talk to some Iranians from Khosestan who lived at the time, they can tell of the times when US soldieres put Iranians in barrels of hot tar and let them burn to death!

I enjoyed this video as a person originaly from Western Iran. I missed the kind hearts of Lors, tehir brave attitude and their hospitality.

The springs of Western Iran is like paradise for me. The blue sky, rivers and the mountains. I just miss it.
