Audacious militarism

Israel has failed to forge an identity of a mature democratic state

Audacious militarism
by Setareh Sabety
31-Dec-2008

Once again Israel has illustrated that she cares little about public opinion. Israel has shown that she has the shameless audacity to bomb civilians in her so called attempt to fight Hamas terrorists. She blames civilian deaths on the fact that Hamas uses civilians as shields.  This senseless bombing of Gaza by more than sixty F16 bombers killing (until now) almost 400 and injuring thousands is as horrendous an act as if the U.S government bombed Long Island in order to eradicate the Mafia!  So far only four Israelis have died.  The Israelis call it a war.  How can this be a war when the other side has no army?

Can we really blame Gazans for fighting the blockading power, which has squeezed the life out of them in an inhumane and draconian siege and blockade, by shooting off the rockets they have? Does the death a handful of people justify the killing of hundreds? Does one wrong ever justify a greater more horrendous wrong?

The audacity of Israel, not his own daring to hope, is what our new president has to address if he wants to bring about real change in this world.  Real change does not come in the life-style choices of the President of the United States but in acknowledging the policy-changing truth we know about our allies! Surely no one can delude themselves into thinking that what Israel is doing in Gaza is in any way legitimate.  This kind of disproportionate reprisal is not the act of responsible democratic regimes; it is the stuff of colonial bullies the acts of genocidal megalomaniacs.  Let me use a domestic analogy from my own life as a mom.

What Israel is doing, bombing Gaza indiscriminately because a couple of lives were lost in rocket launches by a desperate Hamas, is the equivalent of my younger daughter (Hamas) pushing my older, much stronger son, to get to the food on the table and my son (Israel) turning around in anger and smashing his sisters head with a baseball bat and then saying, “but mom she kept doing it over again! She wouldn’t stop!”  It is horrendously disproportionate and down right sick and psychotic behavior.

The fact that Israel is a bully is no news.  The fact that she is unafraid to act undemocratically is also not new. What needs to be understood, however, is that the audacious militarism and rampant disregard for international laws that she displays time and again are responsible for making the world an unsafe place for all of us.

The unconditional American support for Israel that even a parent would not show a mad and psychotic child, is the number one cause of why America is hated in the world.  The support and tolerance of Israel by the West does not only nurture Islamic Fundamentalists and terrorists but it actually gave birth to them.  On the one hand we have students and intellectuals in Iran trying hard, against all odds, and with much risk to their lives, to oppose the extremist Islamist regime on the other there is Israel acting like a bully justifying in the minds of many Iranians and Muslims around the world the actions and tough talk of Ahmadinejad.

Every time Israel acts in this belligerent, illegal and sadistic fashion our plight for secularism is pushed aside for the more immediate plight of fighting an unjust occupying power in Palestine.  So Israel does not only breed terrorists in her own backyard but hinders any indigenous move away from Islamic Fundamentalism in the entire region. She perpetuates divisiveness in a region that is trying hard to find its secular and democratic voice only because she herself has lost her original identity as a place of hope.

If Israel had kept her promise of being a promised land, of being a place of refuge, if Israel had kept her identity as a haven for the unjustly oppressed surely she would not have to bomb half of her population to keep the other half safe? This trigger-happy response in itself reveals Israel’s paranoid view of herself.  After more than a half century of unquestioned supremacy in the region Israel has failed to forge an identity of a mature democratic state at peace, at least, with her own citizens.  Surely this could not be entirely blamed on the ‘Arabs.’  Israel needs to shed her paranoia; she needs to see that no one can push her off the map.  She needs to realize that the only solution to her problems and ours is to have the audacity to change.  To stop being a military base and grow up into a state built on the principals of the right of peoples to self-determination.

Israel needs to wake up and see how she can be an example that counters terrorism and extremism in the region not the problem that perpetuates it.  Only Israelis can bring about peace in the region, let us hope those Israelis who think like me will some day prevail.  Let us hope that the West stops blindly supporting the regime in Israel and gives the world badly needed and real change.

Baa Doroud, There are truths

by Saeed Mohammadi (not verified) on

Baa Doroud,

There are truths in both side of arguments between Shahrex/Behrooz and Setareh.
First thing first.
As long as us Iranians outside of Iran are afraid of putting our names under our own comments, nobody will take our words seriously. Setareh is absolutely right. It is easy to sit in the dark and throw stones at those who are brave enough to express their opinions under the spot light. Bravery is lacking in most of us Iranians. We must stop acting cowardly.

On the other hand, Behrooz is also correct that our first responsibility goes toward our own problems and as long as there is one political prisoner in Iran and as long as there is injustice in Iran, we should focus our full attention to our own land and our people.

I agree with the essence of your article even though I don’t necessary agree with all what you said. I must also point out a couple of MAGHLATEH or logical fallacy in your article when you compare the struggles between Israel and Hamas to a fight amongst siblings. There is no common factor here. I call this MAGHLATEH-E GHIAAS-E MAEL FAREHG. You are an excellent writer and can argue your points very powerfully and effectively, but we must be careful not to mislead our readers.

Hope you soon feel better and are out of the bed.

Keep up the good work and wish you the best in 2009

'true' iranian?

by Niloufar Parsi on

far as i can gather from a few of our friends here, a a 'true' iranian can be defined as one who:

- does not discuss any matter outside of Iran's borders

-  does not discuss any matter inside iran much either, but instead spends all his/her time attacking those who discuss other issues

- does not comprehend the concept of globalisation

- cannot make any connection between the rise of fundamentalism in one place as comapred to another (e.g. zionsim contributing to the rise of al qaeda in the region)

- is quite happy when iran is targeted by militarist bullies, reagrdless of consequences for iranian civilians

- gets particularly annoyed if anyone mentions 'human rights' for human beings other than iranians

-  opposes anything that is 'uniranian' unless it comes from the US or Israel

and most impressively:

- has never come across iranian wisdom or poetry, and has certainly never heard this one: bani adam a'zaye yek digarand.

i don't think i qualify as a 'true iranian' according to these people. fair enough really, given the 'club membership' requirements, i am not sure i want to be a member.

more pertinently/seriously: i do Not believe that being iranian is the same as believing in/supporting autarky or isolationism or american atrocities or zionist atrocities. trouble is: for that sentiment, i am likely to be called:
'anti-semitic', 'anti-american', 'anti-iranian'.  trouble with this
totally servile worldview of
our self-proclaimed 'true' iranians is that it is attached to the skirt
of a failing empire.

multilaterism and constructive engagement with an independent approach and a loving spirit for the wellbeing of humanity is what a 'true' iranian should be about in my opinion.

Peace!

What a true and correct view. Thank you Setareh.
I wish we all could clear our mind and think like Ms Sabeti. I wish we could all see the problems such behaviours ( by any government) can create for everyone regardless of where they are.

Israel has a seious problems which if not addressed soon, it could bring another tragedy to those who have suffered once in Europe, no one wants this. It is time for many true and intelectual followers of Moses to point out to Isreal that it is about the time to wake up.

...until we are afraid of putting our name to a simple internet thread...we will be nothing more than hot air! You guys are unreal! Literally. I could see if you were living in Iran and writing articles or blogs and you were afraid of using your real name for fear of being arrested or harassed. but to not want to put your name on a simple thread on the internet when you don't even live in Iran?

That is downright cowardly and against the essence of the passion you feign in your comments to Shahrex.

At least the kids that argued about politics and Iran in the b.u cafeteria right after the revolution (that was the last time I heard such sophomoric arguments)had a face.

If you feel this strongly about something, my friend, my compatriot, then stand behind your saying and reveal your name. Put your name to your passionately felt opinions or they fail to seem serious!

No wonder there is no viable opposition movement outside of Iran!

Here is an article I wrote about cowardice of the expat intelligentsia vis a vis the Islamic regime:
//iranian.com/SetarehSabety/2002/January/...

Think of the student in Shiraz University who recently had the courage to get up and voice his contempt for Ahmadinejad. He should shame you into at least putting your name to your opinions on this site! If more of us did it then we may have a chance at ousting this regime. We need to put our name to our contempt for the IRI. We need to do it for the sake of the students and activists in Iran!

You are a true Iranian and a true patriot and as a fellow countryman I am proud of you

The problem with most of us Iranian is that we are always

"kaase-ye daagh tar az aash".

Please look at the following web sites and the new movement of “Maa Hastim” which is gathering momentum in Iran.

//www.mahastim.com/

Just like you I believe that we should first be true to our own people and country. Our country needs people like you to help us rebuild this country and re-educate our people

Until there is a single hungry child in Iran, until there is a single Iranian woman who has to sell her body in order be able to feed her children, until there is a single Iranian girl being sold in Dubai as a sex slave into the Arab harems, until there is a single village in Iran lacking gas, electricity and proper medical and educational facilities, until there is a single political prisoner being prosecuted for his/her views and words in IRI’s dungeons, until there is a single country or media company(BBC, VOA, CBS etc)in the world trying to erase our identity and historical right by changing the 3000 years old name of PERSIAN GULF,until there is a single country,Arab or otherwise chalenging the integrity of our borders by claiming the owner ship of our Iranian Islands (Tonbe bozorg, tonbe koochak and aboo moosa) until all this and many more, We should not and would not divert our attention from our own people towards any other problem any where else in the world especially the ones that are none of our business and we do not know much about anyway.

Otherwise we would be responsible for failing our children and future generations we would be responsible for loosing the heritage that has been protect by the blood of our fathers and ansestors through several millenniums and was passed to us in order to be protected and passed to the next generations and I assure you, for this tremendous and shameful failure neither our children nor our ancestors would ever forgive us, as it would be the mother of all betrayals

Stop, think, listen.

by Setareh Sabety on

Dear Shahrex and anyone else sharing his anger and /or point of view,

I am on record under my own name on issues of humans rights, especially woman's rights in Iran. I have written many articles-- one on stoning (the first stone) and another on women (the one quoted by farah rustah) and one about Khatami (iranmania, "I accuse Mr. Khatami" translated into Farsi and printed in Kayhan of London) to name a few--accusing the islamist regime in Iran of abuses and horrors. So I do tackle purely Iranian issues. I do it often using my own name. Which is more than you have the courage to do.

I deserve some credit for that from people like you who feel passionate about their opinions and their country but are afraid to put their name to their beliefs!

I have written many articles about Ahmadinejad and against the IRI regime with as much passion. When i see injustice I write. and I see it here with the actions of Israel. I also explain very clearly why I believe our predicament in the region as people who want a secular Iran is so closely linked with the issue of Palestine.

"Everytime Israel acts in this militaristic, heavy handed and illegitimate manner the cause of secularism in Iran and the region is hindered."

So please do not let your hatred of the mullahs in Iran hinder your judgment of Israel and her actions. I abhor the theocracy in Iran at least as much as you do and I write more to express that than I do against Israel.

Stop, think and listen.

Everyone who disagrees with you is not your enemy.

We need to be democratic in our actions and manner of discussion before we can have a democracy in our motherland.

for this clearly well written piece. I hope I read more of you in 2009.

Reading the comments, I honestly don't know how else one can go about coping with the constant atrocities committed by Israel, if not through expression of one's anger and concern by writing or speaking up. I don't see any demonstrations out there so that I can be a part of, what else can one do??

The events are ever so hedious out there so close to our motherland and naturally we are hit more intensly by these events than the crimes committed in Africa or other parts of the world.

Fight for human rights in Iran Aynak way

"The very nature of Palestinian resistence to Israel for their self determination, can be a symobl for anyone around the world fighting against injustice, including the fight for human rights in Iran."

So petrodollars of Iran go to Palestine and Lebanon and others (by the mullahs) to fight for human rights in Iran???!!!!
Meanwhile Iranians deal with poverty. You should really tell this to young people who are selling their kidneys right now. There is a one hour documentary on this on youtube. Watch it if you get a chance.

Right on, dear Setareh. You are a true Setareh with your nobel writings. I have always anxiously been looking for your articles in Iranian.com, ever since I read one of your articles a few years ago, titled:" Today, I am a Palestinian!"

No wonder you were once elected as the most favorite writer of Iranian.com. That is how much I have followed on your writings.

I have always hated states/governments in the name of religion. That is what Israel is. However, I love all human kind, no matter what their faith is.

Dear Setareh, please try to write more. I can't believe how I can identify with many of your point of views/belief.

Thank you,..........

Now you are talking Sharex, why should we care about Palestine?

by aynak on

This specific post was opened on the most recent attrocities and war crimes committed by the state of Israel. You dont have to care. I do. Because I am an Iranian-American. I pay taxes which goes to fund Israel's war crimes.

The state of Israel has been a major destabilising force in the region, by virtue of not wanting to negotiate with Palestinian to reach a just settlement and sign a peace agreement.

Their policies and the policies of U.S in support of Israel have caused major concepts like Human Rights, War Crimes and Democracy to be defined the way it suits Israel's interest.

The very nature of Palestinian resistence to Israel for their self determination, can be a symobl for anyone around the world fighting against injustice, including the fight for human rights in Iran.

Irandokht, Shahrex is right

by K. (not verified) on

Shahrex is worried about Iran. He/She does not wish to see Iran get involve into this mess which she already is. You guys are doing the dance around this issue.

I do not care for Israel either, but I find it appalling when Iran sends million and millions of dollars to other countries. The great example of that was Lebanon. The last war between the Hezbollah and Israel, Iran spent tones of money for repairing the damage. Now do you find that justified to your HAMVATANS?

Are you aware people going work for different companies in Iran but they are not paid and or if they are paid it's every 6 months, if they are lucky. So they keep changing jobs, maybe get paid this month maybe not.

And one thing I have noticed about your comments is that if you are asked why the human rights violations in other countries are not really covered or brought up by others here, you really don't have a good answer.

Shahrex: You are truly a weisel ...

by IraniIrooni (not verified) on

Your posting supports my view that israel loves this lack of stability as it knows it will benefit it in the long-run. You see, the more bloodshed there is, the more reason/excuse the govt of Iran has to speak loudly, which will give israel more excuse to ask the US, or I should say TELL the US, to attack Iran. Israel wants the non-israel countries to kill themselves and it looks like israel has made some great headway towards accomplishing this - instability in Iraq, edge of another civil war in Lebonan (driven by the random assassinations - random because they in no way benefited Syria, and the israeli short-term invasion of Lebonan in 2006), Egypt not knowing what to do (or not to do), Pakistan/Afghanistan/India mess, crash of oil prices and more and more.

So, in my opinion, many fellow Iranians understand this, and that is why they comment on these events. That is how it is related to them, to us. It is not because they are Muslim. Many Christian Iranians feel the same way. The jewish ones, i don't know ... they usually just stick with each other.

My question to you is this - is your goal to restructure Iran to help all Iranians, or is it to basically get rid of the Muslims? I certainly do not want a theocracy, which is what Iran is right now ... by the way, so is israel. I certainly want the mullas out of the govt. But I won't go as far as having a negative attitude towards all Muslims ... as it appears you do.

Simply put, while you blame all of this on a religion, you are doing exactly what you accuse another religion of doing. Good luck pal. I'd tell ya that the hypocrisy (driven by anger) that you have, isn't recommended for people that want to have a happy life.

Death to IRI, Death to Terrorism, and F..k ISRAEL!

by Shahrex on

I Just wonder why in the hell should we care about what is happening in Israel/Palestine?

Why in the hell should this matter overweigh all other issues in Iranians minds and hearts , why should it dominate the whole political spectrum of Iranian politics both the ruling regims politics and it's opposition?

Why should we att all care about Araba more than we care about our own countrymen, why should we care more about them more than we care about the fate of people in Africa, the fate of people in Central Asia?

Why havent any of you condemned unconditionally Islamic terror, Palestinian terror?

I do give damn about Israel, it is not my issue, i am far from a Pro-Israeli, but i am definitely no an arab-parast!

Yes, please focus on Iran, On women rights in Iran, on Childrens situation, on minorities and ethnical groups rights, focus on the fate ofMilions of jobless Iranians. milions of addicted Iranains, tens of milions of Iranian women imprisoned in a cultural, economical, social, spiritual prison called IRI,....yes PLEASE Focus on that!

IRI is much more forcefully and consistently focusing on The rights of Hamas, Hezbollah,.....why should people like you dance their dance???

The "truce"

by Ajam (not verified) on

American, and in general pro-Israel media keep talking about Hamas breaking the truce. But what they don't say is that the terms of the six-month long truce, that started last June, was broken by the Israelis from the day one.

They only let 30% (about 350 a day) of the trucks, that were supposed to cross into Gaza to deliver food and necessities, to get through. The other 70% were blocked so Israel could keep a choke-hold on the Gazans' livelihood in order to make life impossible for them. They needed to be broken for having voted Hamas into office (in fact most zionists believe that Gazans deserve to be wiped out just for that)!

In other words, Hamas was lured into resuming the rocket attacks by having faced a lose/lose situation! So in reality, it's is blamed for breaking a truce that was never there!

Israel kills 9 Palestinian childern today, the youngest is 2 yea

by zionist detector (not verified) on

rs old. As Israel steps up its attacks on the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip, one of the most densely populated spots on Earth, children are paying the price.

Israel's strike Thursday on the home of top Hamas leader Nizar Rayan was a typical case.

The bomb flattened the house and killed Rayan — as well as 18 other people, including nine of his children, ages 2 to 19, and all four of his wives. Television footage showed medics clutching the bodies of children dug from the rubble of the house and neighboring buildings. Associated Press is reporting today.

For the zionists Palestinan/Muslim blood is cheap any way. It's happening all over the Middle East and the zionists want their share of the massacre.

CHARLATANISM has no SEX!

by Shahrex on

First of all, why should we as IRANIANS care more about what happens in Gaza  than anywhere else?

I have never seen so many pretending humanist intellectuals from our beloved country to surface and announce their sadness about what happens in Darfur,Congo, Zimbabve, Colombia, Nigeria, Guinea,Serilanka,.......

But they are always there when a bunch of Islamist terrorists commit suicide attacks or commit collateral suicide attacks , meaning, attacking Israel to force it to attack Palestinian terrorists sheltering among civilians, leading to killing of some innocent number of civilian people!

Those terrorists count on reflex reactions of this kind, liberals, masked anti-semits, supporters of IRI, brain washed islamists, religious or cultural racists, suddenly crying out their agony for what is happening to poor Palestinians.  I am sure if Palestinians were not moslems, then these Iranian would not care att all for what happening there!

Still they themselves are the victims of Islam and Islamization since 1400 years ago, they are subject to crimes of Islam, Pure and real Islam under IRI, still they care about their brothers in Palestine. They forget that even Palestinans themselves consider Iranains as second class, as worse than dogs, as less worthy than even Jews, they forget that Palestians have supported Saddam, have supported the resolutions of Community of Arab countries calling for the Iranian islands in Persian gulf to be an intgral part of UAE.

Still, when you ask of these Iranian intellectuals supporting Palestinian cause, they have no worthy knowledge about the real nature of the conflict, the real history of Palesinian and jews living in that area, and how the palestinian cause has been abused by all arab dictators and IRI just for internal affairs.

It is somehow perplexing but comic, victims of Islam (IRANIANS), supporting Agents of ISLAM (PAlestinian Terrorists and IRI),Forgetting about the crimes happening in our own country by IRI, focusing on a problem which is not ours, and even is not really a problem the way they present it!

She says Israelis are shelling civilians, then wyh of 400 victims just 60 are civilians? Isn't it so that the Terrorists are using civilians as a shield?

And still, when did you cry about what happens to your own countrymen, when did you cry out about Darfure,..........?

Apparently your problem is not Justice, violence,....you are ideologically too blinded to see the real, or even feel human!

Yes Kourosh S,

Believe it or not there are Jewish terrorists and they also need to be eliminated on the face of this earth. You gave me very good news about the Extremist Mullahs being on their way to Gaza. I hope they can fulfill their dream of meeting their maker.
Hamas has a bigger share in this massacre than Israel. Hamas in 2006 promised Palestinians a better life and security but all they have brought to these poor people is misery and poverty. 80% of Palestinians fall below poverty line. Hamas does not believe in a Peace agreement, they don't want negotiation. They want Israel destroyed. I guess when you ask for the impossible you don't have to be reasonable.

Lady Farah,

I do not mean to meddle in the conversation between you and Lady Setareh, But I can tell you one thing. One of the reason I have started leaving comments on this site is that I find some of the ladies and gentlemen to be impartial and unbiased.

It is sign of a sensible person and unbiased mind to point out both sides of each story. No one can deny the fact that both nations, Palestine, as well as Israel have suffered great deal in this God forsaken 60 year old war.

Both side have lost children, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers brother...and.. and.. in this stupid and never ending war. It would be utter hypocritical to take an absolute side in the subject. This killing has been going on as long as i remember, and i mind you I am not young buck.

I have to object to one point you make though, you say [..The response by Israel to Hamas's recent provocations is indeed.....]

Allow me to remind you that in past 8 years Israel had bourght the most horrific living condition for the 1.5 million soul living in Gaza. Particularly the total blockade of Gaza in past 6 months, which has created the most horrific and inhumane living condition for residents of Gaza.

I invite you to read some of the prior posting by [yours truly] and others to see what exactly has occurred. Blaming the latest round of Israeli ruthless and brutal attack on Gaza, solely on Hamas would be an ugly hypocrisy to say the least.

Have a great evening
