I went to see the movie Argo with my dad. I had chosen this movie because I felt it would be one that would be of interest to my dad, not myself- how I was very wrong. The movie brought on a truth that was not only a reality back in the 70’s but one that is still very real today. As I felt my dad’s energy, one that remembers and still harbors the emotions of an Iran that was and is, an Iran that doesn’t provide opportunity, I felt ashamed.

ReOrienting Myself

In 1990, I auditioned for an acting program in New York and the very thoughtful and pragmatic teacher informed me that I would never be cast as a lead on the American stage. I would only be considered for domestic help parts or minor support roles. His reasons were my “ethnic” looks and my accent. The accent I could be coached out of but there was little I could do about my looks. His message, as I heard it was to basically give up on a career in professional theater in the US; his “American stage” had no room for someone like me.

در یک روز پاییزی تورونتو و در یک جمع خصوصی، فیلم سینمایی «پرویز» به کارگردانی مجید برزگر را دیدم. فیلمی که این روزها مشغول کسب جوایز از فستیوال های مهم دنیا است. سعید آرمند تهیه کننده ایرانی- کانادایی، در آغاز فیلم از لحظات تلخ و شیرین ساختن فیلم مستقل در ایران گفت و فیلم شروع شد.

حاجی، حاجی تبریز بود. یکی دو ماهی بود که تو هتل می‌دیدیمش. یه‌بار هم وسطاش رفت ایران و دوباره برگشت. نمی‌دونستیم چی می‌فروخت، چی می‌خرید و یا طرف معامله‌ش کی بود.

ساعت ۱۲ قرار بود مرخص بشه. چند دقیقه ای‌ دیر رسیدم. به سرعت راهرو‌های بیمارستان را طی‌ می‌کردم. وسط راه افسانه را دیدم با یکی‌ از خدمه بیمارستان بود، دست هر دو پر از ساک و پاکت بود. در این مدت ۱۲ روز آنقدر برایش لباس و کتاب و وسیله برده بودم که دست همه پر بود.

Père Lachaise Cemetery, one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year to the grave sites of famous artists and writers. I went there to pay my respect to Sadegh Hedayat’s memory. I found the graves of Marcel Proust and Edith Piaff and missed the graves of many others including Chopin, Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. These are a few photos I took entering and exiting the area.

معلوم نیست کجا تو خارج می گرده که این همه نفرت از شهروندهای معمولی پیدا کرده؟ چرا اصرار داره اعمال معمولی شهروندا رو سیاه جلوه بده؟ با عینک مذهبی های افراطی ببینه؟ اعمال ما رو سرشار از گناه بدونه چرا اصرار داره ثابت کنه ملت بی فرهنگی هستیم؟ می خواد بگه ما خس و خاشاکیم؟
