این اردوگاه (Sachsenhausen) در نزدیکی‌ شهر ارانینبورگ (Oranienburg) قرار دارد. این اردوگاه در سال ۱۹۳۶ میلادی ساخته شد تا محلی باشد برای قتل عامِ بسیاری از مردم که نازی‌ها تصور می‌‌کردند که آنها دشمنِ آلمان هستند. در ۹ سالی‌ که این اردوگاه زیر نظر نازی‌ها اداره می‌‌شد،بیش از ۳۰.۰۰۰ نفر (آمارِ جدید و مطمئن) به قتل رسیدن.

A visit to Herat had been one of my desires since I arrived in Afghanistan. This became possible just over a year later, when I flew from Tehran to Mashhad to catch a plane to Kabul, but missed it. I then decided to travel to Herat by land and take a UN flight to Kabul the next day. Further flight problems in Herat made me stay there for two days– the chance I had been longing for to see this charming city, the birthplace of so much beauty that large of parts of it still remain, after centuries of conquest, plunder and killing.

I like the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. The American side feels unsafe and unfriendly. One can walk the Canadian streets any time of the day or night … American streets, we only dare to drive through. I don’t like places where I can’t walk. There is a whole lot of water in Niagara Falls Ontario, and a whole lot of wine. Perhaps the global warming is helping us, because the wine industry has grown substantially since the first commercial winery started here in 1979 … just as the last wineries closed in Iran.

We started in Madrid, took the fast train to Seville, rented a car, drove through Ronda to Marbella. Spent a week with a wonderful friend, went on day trips from there to Gibraltar, Alhambra and Tangiers (Morocco), and then flew to Barcelona -- the finale (Barcelona) is a must-go-back-to!

I came to know about Tanha (A1one) several years ago in Tehran. At the time, I didn’t know who was responsible for the graffiti work I sometimes saw around the city. All I knew was that I had never seen such interesting graffiti in Iran. I couldn’t imagine the courage it took for anyone to write and create art on Tehran walls, a domain interchangeably used for government propaganda and for the harried, short words of those opposing the government, sure to be crossed out or white washed the next day.

"Born in 1962 in Tehran, Iran, Yari Ostovany moved to the United States in 1978 and pursued his studies in Art first at the University of Nevada - Reno and then at the San Francisco Art institute, receiving an MFA in Painting in 1995.

Kabul Days (28): We went to the opening of the Afghan Foundation for Culture and Civil Society (FCCS) in old Kabul, on the slope of one of the hills in the middle of the city. From the outside, there’s nothing but mud-brick walls, uneven dirt roads, with all sorts of recyclable objects everywhere. The center though is based in a very big and old building of the type still seen in many provincial Iranian cities, with an ‘inner’ and an ‘outer’ courtyard and rooms around them.

Visiting Sadegh Hedayat

Père Lachaise Cemetery, one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year to the grave sites of famous artists and writers. I went there to pay my respect to Sadegh Hedayat’s memory. I found the graves of Marcel Proust and Edith Piaff and missed the graves of many others including Chopin, Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. These are a few photos I took entering and exiting the area.

A man I know just returned from Puerto Vallarta. He had gone there on a week-long trip arranged by his country club. They golfed for three days on courses planned by world famous designers. The rest of the time they stayed in the resort which like the golf courses is on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta. He said most of these Americans avoided going to town for fear of getting sick from the water as well as other, new plights of a Mexican environment.

I can't tell you how special Machu Picchu is. You climb hundreds of steps up the steep mountain, reaching the top breathless only to be blown away by the magnificent stone structures and terraces under the first rays of light at sunrise. Some would call it a religious experience but I was at awe at the people who dreamed up this place and actually build it over dozens of years. What imagination! What determination! What ingenuity! Absolutely awesome.

I arrived in Cusco yesterday morning and already I've found a charming little apartment to rent for the next two months. Cusco of course is most famous for being near Machu Picchu and every year large number of tourists flock to it. Enjoy!
