On a typically wet and dreary day in London, I arrived, umbrella in hand, at the doorstep of Afsoon’s Ladbroke Grove studio, and rang the buzzer. Seconds later, I was greeted by a grinning woman with mid-length jet black hair, a red neckerchief, psychedelic Doc Martens, and a quaint, super-cool jumper which read Ginsberg is God on the front, and somewhat less reverently, Goddard is Dog on the flipside.

I came to know about Tanha (A1one) several years ago in Tehran. At the time, I didn’t know who was responsible for the graffiti work I sometimes saw around the city. All I knew was that I had never seen such interesting graffiti in Iran. I couldn’t imagine the courage it took for anyone to write and create art on Tehran walls, a domain interchangeably used for government propaganda and for the harried, short words of those opposing the government, sure to be crossed out or white washed the next day.

"Born in 1962 in Tehran, Iran, Yari Ostovany moved to the United States in 1978 and pursued his studies in Art first at the University of Nevada - Reno and then at the San Francisco Art institute, receiving an MFA in Painting in 1995.

Cruzing in Space and Time

Before I went to Buenos Aires a friend of mine recommended that I see the "3D" works of Carlos Cruz-Diez when I get there. I forgot. But a couple of days ago when I took my artist friend Amir Salamat to the Museum of Latin American Art (MALBA), we were in luck. There was a major exhibition of Cruz-Diez's works. What a treat. Amazing what rows of parallel lines can do to your senses.

Mélodie Hojabr Sadat was born in Paris in 1989. She spent her childhood in France and at the age of 10, Mélodie moved to Iran. She learned Persian and at the age of 18 after receiving her diploma Mathematics and Physics in Mashhad, she returned to France, with an empty suitcase and both full of constructive memory. Since childhood, she was self-taught and passionate about the design but after her return she has taken it seriously with a different outlook on life [watch "My World"].

Statement for exhibition at Queen Gallery (Toronto - Canada, 2010): This exhibition showcases all new artwork that I have made since I have left Iran. All of the work has been made in the short period (about five months) since I have been here. This work was inspired by my reflections, often in my bed, as I am drifting off to sleep, on my memories and the mystery of the future. I don’t know what the future holds for me and as I lay there thinking about it, I draw.

As one treads a path among these flamboyant features one easily identifies them as stereotypical adolescent city girl in today Iran. Vanity, overindulgence, artificiality, extravagance; these are the expressions which come up in a spectator’s mind in the first place.

In the corner of the gallery in Berlin, I finally saw the paintings I had come to see - those by Parastou (whose name means swallow) Forouhar- the ones with the many butterflies and guns, as well as the chess tables. Next to the table where I sat to rest a bit before looking at each individual painting and sketch, I spotted a brochure about the artist.
