Going All the Way

So Team Melli seemingly cruises to the quarter-final round of the 2011 Asian Nations Cup. After conceding an early goal to Iraq, our boys have not allowed a goal and have won all of their round robin matches – the only team to have achieved either feat. The next game against South Corea will be a classic, as it is considered by many to be the continent’s biggest rivalry dating back to 1970’s. This will be the fifth consecutive quarter-final game between the two giants in Asian Nations Cup with each winning two games – Iran in 1996 and 2004, South Korea in 2000 and 2007.

I am stronger than my fears

There are so many things in life that scare me. I am extremely afraid of heights, not a fan of diving, and also dislike small tight places. There are few more on my list that I won’t share but amongst them are also the fear of swimming in the ocean and speed. You might ask yourself how did I pick Triathlon as my favorite sport if I am afraid of swimming in the open water and speed. Well, I didn’t pick the sport. It picked me :o)

Decline of Iranian Football

Our football has been in decline in the past thirty years, especially in the past year both at club levels and at the national level. There are a few good players, but they cannot make a huge difference. Clubs should be privatized and managed professionally.

Keeping balance

I read an article posted by Siamack Baniameri ["Once there was a legend"], there were a few remarks I could not let pass. Judging from the comments there, I gathered Siamack is an old and well-respected friend of Iranian.com. So I reread the article, just to make sure that I had read it right. And hey, I had read it right. Yes, Gholamreza Takhti was saluted, praised, and acknowledged as a legendary pahlavan.

Who Killed the Sport of Wrestling?

You might've seen or heard of Ara Abrahamian, the Armenian born Swedish wrestler who dropped his bronze medal on the mat to protest judging at Olympics wrestling. Most people in the media blamed him for poor sportsmanship. IOC officials took away his medal. What you may not know is that, without a doubt, Abrahamian lost his chance at gold only because of bad calls. No one disputes that. He had also previously lost the world championship because of bad calls. Can you see why an athlete may feel it is worthless to train and try in this sport?

Dinner with the captain

Last night the legendary Iranian football icon, former national team captain Mr. Parviz Ghelichkhani was the honored guest of Pars Soccer Club of Northern California. It was a get-together to remember and to celebrate the occasion at a chelokababi in Sunnyvale.
Ghelichkhani talked about soccer, politics and his current passion, Arash magazine based in Paris.
It was a pleasure to be in his company and certainly an honor listening to his sensible and intelligent words.
Wish you were here. To visit his site please go to: ARASHMAG.COM
read more

Win or lose

I came to the Netherlands with my wife, Kirsten, in 2000. Even before I came here, I was looking forward to going to football matches and watching a lot of football. Here in Rotterdam where I have settled, there are three professional football teams that play in the Dutch first division (Eredivisie). The most well-known of these is Feyenoord which is one of the three top clubs along with Ajax of Amsterdam and PSV from Eindhoven. Then there is Sparta and Excelsior. Since I have been here, I have on many occasions seen all three Rotterdam teams play in their home stadiums.

Violent past AND peaceful present

Although the Foreign Terrorist Organizations list has a set of criteria for designating groups, there is little clarity in practice about the process for revocation. Even after organizations have renounced terrorism for many years, their designations persist without a clear explanation, and are based on the assumption that historical violence indicates future potential.

My favorite sport

…The mind is like a parachute - it works only when it is open…

Don’t ask me why I decided to interview Reza Pahlavi and talk about Iranian football, but I am glad that I did. I always had a fascination to get deep inside of that nostalgic road and question Prince Reza Pahlavi about Iranian football and his recollections of pre-revolutionary Iran.

Truthfully, I also wanted to know what it was like to be the prince of Persia and have unlimited access to A to Z of Iranian football.
