First day of school

In 1981, my mother dropped me off for my first day of Kindergarten, shortly after our move to a new country, with a new home, a new language, new streets, new faces, all of whom I had no idea how to exist with. I was understandably reluctant. "No, I am not going!" I stomped my foot with all the strength a 4 year old could muster. I pleaded. I begged. I threatened a full on tantrum. Finally, my mother relented. "Okay fine, no school" she said, "Let's just go for a walk."

I was picking up SweetPea from school when this woman I had never seen before slipped in as I opened the gate and started bombarding me with questions:

-Shoma irooni hasstin? (You Iranian?)

-Bachatoon chand vaghte miyaad injaa? (How long has your son been coming here?)

-Raazi hasstin? (Are you satsified?)

-Moalemma khooban? (Are the teachers good?)

Rebound girlfriend

My mom left after an extended stay with us and I feel like the poorest of substitutes. She and Sweetpea bonded so much over this particular trip, more than grandma and grandson, more than best friends, really like a couple in love. They were joined at the hip from the first moment of the morning when he would awake her with a kiss while she was pretending to still be asleep in her bed, to the inevitable Romeo and Juliet like forced separation of bedtime.

I started to watch the movie Agora (meaning public place or place of assembly in Ancient Greek) on television quite by chance and almost reluctantly as I was not really in the mood for a swords and sandals epic. How wrong I was! Though the story takes place in Ancient Alexandria, it has absolutely none of the cliches that you expect from a classic swords and sandals epic.
