Faking Yazdger Again, and Faking Omar Too!

A few years ago, and under different political circumstances, I wrote a brief preface to a letter attributed to Yazdgerd III and supposedly addressed to either Omar or the Prophet Mohammad himself. It aimed to show that the letter was indeed fake, despite claims of the existence of its original version in the British Museum, a claim that initiated many emails to several acquaintances at the British Museum and other British institutions, enquiring after the original of this letter.

Ahmadinejad and the UN Summit

The walk out of the representatives of the France, Great Britain, and the previously announced boycott of Ahmadinejad’s talk in the Geneva anti-Racism conference on 20 April 2009 has been on top of the news during the last two days. Ahmadinejad apparently called Israel a racist regime and suggested that by sending European and American immigrants to Palestine, the European powers had tried to create a racist power in the Near East. This caused the aforementioned walk-out of the representatives of European powers and their disgust at Ahmadinejad’s words, going as far as M.

Honest Genocide

Three years ago, I was sitting at the Starbucks in Westwood, Los Angeles, having a cup of tea and doing my readings. Next to me was sitting a small, elderly lady who was obviously waiting for someone. I guessed she might be Iranian, and then turned my attention to ancient economy.

Dialogue of Civilisations?

I came online to write this little entry about the planned closure of IsIAO when I saw this letter from Prof. Yarshater which says all that needs to be said.

IsIAO, the Italian academic entity that overseas the research on the Near East and North Africa done by various Italian experts, is facing closure based on a decree passed by the Italian cabinet, headed by a certain Mr. Silvio Berlusconi, whose political leanings are well known.

Ms. Bhutto was killed today. I was informed thanks to an early phone call from a telemarketer who woke me up and then I ended up watching the TV.

Is this punishment?

I generally do not mess with the politics, since I have no expertise in it. But who can avoid politics these days, with everything, even being an academic, becoming politicised? So, consider this not a statement, rather a question. Yes, it has a "commentary" to it, but I mean it only as a way of posing the question and don't expect support or refutation, rather answers and ideas.

Rise and Fall of the Lulubi Empire

The Lulubi were a group of people belonging to the Guti tribal confederation. They were a small and unimportant group, spending their days herding sheep and sometimes even worse. However, a turning point in their history came when a group of Lulubi sheep herders were ambushed by the Assyrians, and the former used a Lulubi skill to defeat the Assyrians. Being excellent masters of singing lullabies, the Lulubis put the Assyrians to sleep and then cold bloodedly massacred them all.
