Something About Christmas

I have fond memories of Manouchehri Street in Tehran, where my school was located, in the heart of the Armenian section of Tehran. My school, a French Catholic school, took its name-- Jeanne D’Arc--from that famous heroine of France during the Middle Ages who, according to legend, was burnt alive at the age of nineteen. As a young child, during Christmas, the whole street where the school was located was illuminated with lights, Christmas trees were sold at the corner, and all the shops were decorated. As a kid I was dazzled by it all.

Free Farshad Ghorbanpour!

When I was the Persian editor at the International Center for Journalists, I had the privilege to get to know many Iranian journalists, among them Farshad Ghorbanpour. He had been in prison for a month, only to be released on 50 million touman bail. I wrote about him and he thanked me upon his release. From then on, we became good friends and spoke regularly. We exchanged books, both being interested in Iranian history.

Thy father's sins

Recently we heard the wise words of the son of the late Mohammad Reza Shah promoting a non-violent movement towards democracy. Such rhetoric makes sense to those who have been the victims of the Islamic regime's fanaticism and violence, and who have lost every bit of faith in the Khatami government which promised more than it delivered.

A year of torment for Iran. HISTORY IN THE MAKING

In 2009 I lost my beloved father, the youngest judge of his time, a man of integrity .

In 2009 I lost my aunt, the first modern woman painter of Iran.

In 2009 I lost a close friend, a good soul, to prostate cancer.

In 2009 Iran was ready for change.

In 2009 Iran voted for change.

In 2009 people asked “where is my vote?”

In 2009 people protested peacefully against fraud but were met with violence.

We will be waiting for you in New York, Mr. “President”

We will be waiting for you on September 23rd, all of us, from all over the US. We are not just green, red and white, but a variety of colors. We are the rainbow of Iran. We are a colorful mix and represent all of Iran, young and old, women and men, from the entire political spectrum and all walks of life.

Mr. President, you took our people’s votes, you trampled on them, you ridiculed us and you disgraced the nation of Iran. But the world saw a different Iran, an anguished and injured Iran but also a courageous and absolutely resolute Iran.
