Who Invented The Motorcar Again?

Don't know if you caught it last night (if you didn't, you can look at a report here), but in the middle of his speech to congress, president Obama offered up this little gem, "... the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it." There is of course a problem here, and the blogosphere was quick to pick up on it.

Sabra Found On Ebay.

Just found this while clowning around on ebay. It's a 1963 Sabra, a sports car built in Israel. Like the Paykan, it's built to a British design, in this case the Reliant Sabre. It's not a terribly good car, to be frank -the Sabre was never a car to set the world alight. It is though, a slice of history, and a rare one at that; just over 200 were built in all.

To be honest, it's also hard to look at from the front, which is a shame because in profile, and from the rear, it's actually rather nicely proportioned.

Shah's Other Cars.

Slow day I guess, but Kaveh Nouraee was nice enough to point out a couple of Lamborghini's original super car that were also owned by the Shah. One is a late SV model, one of less than 150 produced, and in one of the nicest color schemes I've seen.

Do Not Want.

Clearly, there has been some mistake... Saw this on the way into work this morning and while it's not my habit to call other drivers out on their selection of customizing choices, I'm baffled by this. Buying a Volkswagen Phaeton was a brave choice that showed a commitment to understated cool in the face of severe depreciation. It's an awesome car, much cooler than the Bentley Continental and Audi A8 with which it shares its platform. Most of them left the factory in black or white, simple colors that kept the car hidden in traffic.

This Aggression Will Not Stand Man!

Speed limits are inherently bad things. No, really, I just said that. It's not that I want a world where everyone drives around at breakneck speed for the hell of it, but rather that, on evidence, speed limits actually contribute to bad driving, accidents, and... speeding. It's a simple idea, tell a person that the maximum speed at which they can drive is, and they'll drive faster. It really doesn't matter how fast that speed is, it's the limitation itself.

California Dreamin...

It's a perfect day in Southern California. From Doheny to Leo Carrillo, the beaches are crying out to be cruised, the canyons to be raced, the mountains to offer forth their vistas. And here I am, sitting at work.

Saturday can't come soon enough. Still, I can dream, of a warm sun a cool wind, and a nifty new Spitfire with a red racing stripe. Seriously, how hip is this add? What has happened to SoCal car culture? It used to be so fun!

Chasing William's Ghost.

It's on the way back down the course that everything suddenly falls into place. For more than an hour Evan and I have been running up the hill from Cahuenga Pass, looking for the corners listed on a small map on the back of a book.
