It is barely six months since Dimitry Medvedev left the Kremlin to become Russia's prime minister and in that short time he has seen his power and influence significantly reduced.

President Putin has been reversing many of the reforms which Mr Medvedev promoted when he was head of state.

This has led to suggestions that he is gradually being side-lined.

Oil top of agenda as President Putin visits Beijing

by Darius Kadivar on

Oil talk as Putin visits Beijing (bbc, Video)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has begun a three-day trip to China, which will be his first overseas visit since starting an historic third term last month.

He is set to discuss energy ties with Beijing and a group called the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The SCO is made up of six members, including central Asian nations like Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The group controls oil and natural gas fields, as well as pipeline routes between China and Russia.

Russia is the world's leading oil producer and China is the largest consumer of energy. However, China's demand for oil from Russia has fallen in recent years, from 11% in 2006 to about 7% in 2011.

So with China seeking cheaper natural resources, how will this impact their trade relationship? Dr Youfa Liu, deputy head of China's Institute of International Studies in Beijing says they'll need to agree on pricing going forward.

Medvedev named ruling party chief

by Darius Kadivar on

Medvedev named ruling party chief (bbc)

Russia's ruling party has appointed Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as its new leader at a congress in Moscow.

The former president succeeds his ally, President Vladmir Putin, who nominated him for the job in April.

Correspondents say that Mr Medvedev is taking over a party which finds itself in deep crisis.

Despite suspicions of widespread vote rigging, United Russia lost a quarter of its seats in the parliament after the elections in December.

Mr Medvedev, who was elected unopposed by a show of hands, called for more democracy within the party and for all party positions to be chosen by secret ballot.

Officials admit that a comprehensive revamp is badly needed before the upcoming season of regional elections.

The prime minister said United Russia had to change with the times.

'Occupy' goes Russian: Anti-Putin protesters camp in Moscow

by Darius Kadivar on

'Occupy' goes Russian: Anti-Putin protesters set up camp in Moscow (france 24)

The protesters that have set up camp in Moscow around the statue of a little-known 19th centuryKazakh poet named Abai have dubbed their protest “Occupy Abai”. Though the movement may look a lot like Occupy Wall Street on the surface, the protesters’ demands are very different. While the Occupy movement in the United States denounces the excesses of capitalism, Occupy Abai is focused on getting rid of Vladimir Putin, who has just began his third round as president, as well as ensuring free and fair elections. (The election that brought Putin back into office was marred with complaints of widespread fraud.) This camp grew out of the 20,000-strong protest held in the streets of Moscow on Sunday, on the eve of Putin’s inauguration. The police brutally cracked down on protesters, hitting them with batons and making hundreds of arrests. Since then, several hundred protesters have persevered, marching through the streets during the day and camping in squares at night. For the past few days, they’ve stayed in Chistye Prudy square, at the foot of the poet’s statue, despite attempts by the authorities to discourage them.

This brand of democracy

reminds us all of the type excercized in places like Iran. What I don't understand is who are these people trying to fool? Why insist on the existence of democracy when clearly there isn't any? Putin could be president for 6 years this time!

It is so screwed up, it is actually funny.

Cheers.
