Shah of Iran Mohamed Reza Shah Pahlavi (Left) greets Prince Regent of Iraq, Crown Prince Abd Al-Illah (Right) , at Mehrabad Airport. Iran and Iraq have pledged to a Mutual Aid Treaty for the maintenance of Peace between the two countries. Tehran, Iran  (circa 1949). A son of King Ali ibn Hussein of Hejaz, who was the elder brother of King Faisal I of Iraq, he assumed power upon Ghazi's death in an automobile accident. He was deposed briefly by former prime minister Rashid Ali al-Kaylani, who led a pro-German coup during World War II but was restored after the United Kingdom invaded the country in May 1941.

'Abd al-Ilah stepped down in 1953, when Faisal came of age, but he continued to be a close adviser of the young king, and an advocate of a pro-Western foreign policy. He was killed, along with most of the royal family, on July 14, 1958, in a coup d'état led by Colonel Abdul Karim Qassim that brought an end to the Iraqi monarchy. His body was trailed on al Rashid street and was cut into pieces.

More than 1,200 people executed in Iraq since 2004

by Darius Kadivar on

The high rate of executions in Iraq has sparked calls for a moratorium from the UN, the UK, EU and the human rights group, Amnesty International.

Executions were halted after President Saddam Hussein was ousted in the US-led invasion into the country in 2003.

However, the Iraqi authorities reinstated capital punishment the following year, saying it was needed because of attacks by insurgents and sectarian violence.

Iraq executes 11 despite outcry (bbc)

Iraq executes 11 people in a single day, despite widespread international condemnation of Baghdad's use of the death penalty.

Eleven people have been executed in Iraq, bringing the number of executions this year to at least 113.

Ten Iraqis and one Algerian were put to death on Sunday, the justice ministry told the BBC. The men were convicted of terrorist activities, reports say.

The high number of executions has led to international calls for a moratorium on Baghdad's use of the death penalty.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has described the situation as "terrifying".

Speaking in January, Ms Pillay said there were major concerns about due process and fairness of trials in Iraq.

'Many' killed in Baghdad attack (bbc)

A suicide car bomber has killed at least 28 people and injured at least 60 in a predominantly Shia Muslim district of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

The bomb went off in a market place as a funeral procession was passing in the city's Zafaraniya district.

A security official told Reuters the bomber had initially attempted to attack a police station.

Attacks in Iraq have risen since US troops left last month, with 16 people killed in attacks on Thursday.
