Mammad's Shrimp Moment

The other day Mammad Agha came to see me. We have been friends for a long time. I know his family from back home.

That day, Mammad looked different somehow. He seemed quiet and introspective.

After a short hello and how are you, he looked me in the eyes and asked, "BN jan, have you ever thought how many personalities you have?"

I honestly did not know what he was asking me. "I have only one personality. The one I was born with. How many personalities do you have, Mammad Jan?"

My Love Affair with Catherine Zeta Jones

The other day I was all alone in the shop and waiting for my first customer of the day, when the door opened, the bell above the door went ding dong, and she walked in. At first I did not quite believe my eyes. "Catherina zeta Jones? What are you doing here - what can I get for you - isn't this my good fortune - coffee or tea - you look so beautiful... " I said, like a man with verbal diahrria.

She looked at me with a smile that only zeta is able to give a man.

"What is your name?"

"BN"

The Case of Missing Johnny Dollar.

The other day Hassan agha came to see me. He lives in Ohio and, I hate to say, he visits me on the first day of April every year. He is a good man with a good heart and nothing gives him more pleasure than to tease people, specially on April Fools' Day. So after a short hello and how are you, we sit in his car and go to the nearest mall so Hassan agha can do what he does best.

Suicide

Today I learnt that one of my son’s high school mates has committed suicide. He was a very nice teenage young man who for reasons that are yet unknown to me decided to take his own life and make his parents live in hell for the rest of their lives. He was the third student in that school who has killed himself in last four years.

Jamshid's Story - Part 1

The other day my old friend, Jamshid, came to see me. The store was quiet and customers were nowhere to be found. We sat in the back office and chatted about everything, this and that and so on. He then started telling me what had happened in his household not too long ago which I found very interesting. It made me sit up and listen. So here goes the story:

Jamshid: I had a call from my wife, Ladan. She sounded ever so excited. What is the matter, Ladan jan? Is there anything wrong, my Cutie Pie?

Life is Not a Lollipop

I felt a hard kick on my behind.
I took my head out of sand to see who my attacker was.
I was not too surprised to see that Life was getting ready
for one of his old favorite tricks again.
"Not again" I said trying not to look at his face.
"Oh yes, it is time for another round." Life said looking at me with his familiar lecherous eyes.
Having known Life for many years and having been screwed by him numerous times,
I got into his favorite position. He looked happy and started.

The other day a friend came over to the store and invited me to go for a ride in his brand new sports car. I was excited and looking forward to ride in one of those fast and expensive cars that I can not afford to buy for myself. It was a black Porsche which he had bought for around one hundred thousand dollars. So I sat in the passenger seat, got myself strapped in, and got ready to fly.

Writing Young Love: My Manije

The day I had dreaded for weeks had finally arrived and we were all gathered at the TBT bus station in downtown Tehran to say our goodbyes. Our neighbors of many years were finally leaving Tehran and were taking my Manije, their daughter, with them. I stood there with a hugest lump in my throat. I felt that the world was about to come to an abrupt end and I along with everyone else in it were about to die of either extreme sadness or by drowning in our own tears.

Grown Up Little Brats

Where have all the little jerks who were trouble and bullies and caused pain on other kids at school gone? Well, unfortunately these guys are still around. Just look around and you will see them everywhere. No more little, they have grown up into big jerks with white hair and even white eyebrows. The wrinkles on their faces and brows can mislead one into believing that life and living have taught these brats of yesterday some wisdom and tolerance and patience. But don't let their pseudo-wise looks fool you.

The other Sunday I was relaxing and reading my book when I suddenly heard my cousin's extremely high pitched scream. I nearly jumped out of my skin. I ran to her as fast as I could. I found her holding her two year old son close to her chest and she had her fingers in his mouth. I heard her say that the boy had fallen down on his behind and as the result he had bitten off part of his tongue, a large piece of which was now hanging loose.

Death Phobia

At each stage in life we look at death in a different way.

When I was much younger, say in my twenties, death seemed to be too far away to even bother thinking about. But now that I am much older, the concepts of life and death have become way too close for comfort and in fact the ever thinning line that once separated them can hardly be noticed. I think of death constantly and I keep asking myself what is life all about. Where did I come from, how fast life has passed me by and when is my time to bid this world farewell.
