In search of an expert answer as to whether Nowruz is a political and/or religious event, University of Chicago seemed like a credible institution to go to. On Wednesday, November 7, 2012, we spoke with Doctor Franklin Lewis, Associate Professor of Persian, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at University of Chicago.

Nowruz Coming to Chicago, according to Brian Foster:

The magnificent city of Chicago is starting to get ready for Spring and the celebration of Nowruz! In every house the annual spring cleaning is taking place, sweets and flowers are being purchased, new garments and gifts are being gathered, the enchanting Nowruz spread (The haft-seen) is being assembled, and the city is slowly coming back to life after a long gloomy winter.

Wanting to explore pieces of historical Persia may seem unattainable especially since we are living so far away from that land. But did you know that there are historical Persian artifacts at the Oriental Institute right here in the beautiful city of Chicago? Currently these artifacts are not being showcased in part due to a renovation that is being taken place.

On Monday 13 JUNE 2011 at 6pm human right activists gathered at the southeast corner of Michigan and Congress, symbolically renaming the area: Azadi Square (“Freedom Square” in
Persian). The original Azadi Square in Tehran was the location of massive peaceful protests in June 2009 that were quashed by Iran’s authorities.

On Thursday 2nd of June 2011, I attended an opening reception at the magnificent Gar Memorial Hall in the Chicago Cultural Center for a national touring art show titled “WOUNDED in ACTION an Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements” a group show featuring ARIO MASHAYEKHI, Chicago’s very own among seventy six other artists.

This juried exhibition pushes the viewer through profound art to see the reality of life after war and the strength of survivors of wars.

Many inquired about the 2011 photo report of Chicago’s Sizdah-Bedar, and the reply is: we were waiting for New York to have their Nowruz Parade till we could publish our Sizdah-Bedar, which always comes in that order!
