No way back

For 30 years I had been under the impression that as unsophisticated and barbarous as the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) appeared, it had an uncanny intelligence for holding onto power. They had achieved this appearance by adhering to three main principles:

Politics makes strange bedfellows

One of the interesting features of the Iranian demonstrations in London is the division which has occurred between the vast majority of the people which stand to one side and a much smaller group consisting of the monarchists and the Mojahedin Khlagh (MKO) that stand together distinguished by their flags bearing the lion and the sun. Oddly the monarchists and the MKO seem to have put aside their differences and united as a result of the symbolic importance of the flag in their respective movements.

What we can do to help

I am sure that many of you feel the same frustration as I in term of seeing and hearing what is happening in Iran and not being able to do anything meaningful to help. Venting on sites such as this represents an outlet for all of us and hopefully does some good in terms of sharing information and carrying the message to those who would otherwise not be as involved. But is there more that we can do?

United we stand, divided we fall

For over 30 years the Islamic Republic of Iran has managed to hold on to and consolidate its power through a combination of repression, brutality, spreading of fear and remaining united in the face of their enemies. All of that changed on Friday 19 June when their supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, reduced himself to the ranks of a factional politician and took sides in Iran’s disputed elections. Khamenei’s words in support of a falsified election signalled the end of the Islamic Republic’s hard-earned legitimacy and moved the country and its people into uncharted waters. Iranians insid
