the guess who were a wonderful canadian band in the late sixties and early seventies. they are most famous for their song 'american woman' but they had a lot of other hits. one of them is very beautiful, and very sad. i wanted to post it. it has nothing to do with my feelings for all of you. but it's something i have to post

last december nazy wrote an article called "my generation."

it actually began as a post on jahanshah's photo essay "daughter of the revolution."

When Nothing Is Sacred Except the Secular

No matter how long I take, how hard try to research it, organize, it, write it, it'll always be inadequate. So maybe the best way to write this blog is to just copy the post I just wrote swept up by the moment to Faryarm (a Bahai) on my "Imagine a World Without War!" blog on folk singer Buffy Ste. Marie. (As most of you know I am not a Bahai, I have no particular creed at all).

*        *        *

To Faryarrm:

Imagine a World Without War!

Buffy Ste. Marie is a native American, she was born on a reservation, she was orphaned, she went on to earn a PhD in Fine Arts and to become one of the leading folk singers of the 60's who inspired the anti-war movement. I have been wanting to post this video for a while. It is one of the more moving anti-war documents I have ever seen. But I didn't even know until just now that in the 1970's she became a Bahai. This is serendipitous. I am not surprised.

Here she sings "Universal Soldier" at a rally for Vietnam veterans.

The Shapour Bakhtiar Blog

The Shapour Bakhtiar blog (most discussed) was just closed for good reasons. I was a participant on this thread but I had to stop for two days and it closed before I could make a couple of comments to the bloggers. I think it was a very important thread. But I haven't really been able to read the numerous comments of the past couple of days so I want to just say what I thought was most important about the discussion as I left it:

The Long Goodbye

Okay so my leaving spurred a bunch of conversations I can't leave hanging. They are diverse: one is political, one is about linguistics, and one is about clarifying some misunderstandings about my meaning and intentions in various things I've said on previous blogs. So for now this is my tentative update on the long goodbye (those who don't care, you don't have to tell me. This blog is not intended for you. Obviously).

zan o mard mard o zan

When I entered this blogging community last October people often used to ask me "Why Iran?" It's strange. Nobody ever asks me that anymore. They just say "Rosie, you're one of us."

But they used to ask me that question a lot. And there were so many reasons why. But they were all really part of one big reason, like so many facets of one brilliant diamond..And so it was very hard to answer. But one of these facets of this diamond was linguistics.

Mahmood and me

I have been thinking about Mahmood today. Actually I think about Mahmood quite often. I know, so do you.

I don't think Mahmood and I could ever be friends. I doubt we'd get along. And somehow I suspect that if I lived in Tehran, I would call Evin Prison home. But that's not so much what I've been thinking about today as I've been thinking about Mahmood.

I have been thinking about the goldfish. The kind of goldfish who swims up to me every now and then, could be anywere on the website, and says you know Rosie I try to read everything you write. No I didn't know. That kind of goldfish And then they swim away.

at the end of bezaie's mosaferaan, at the funeral that was supposed to be a wedding, but the bride's sister and her family and one other person died on the way in a car crash--they were bringing the family mirror that was supposed to be used at the wedding, an old old persian custom--every class, political persuasion and walkof life in iran is assembled at the funeral, and it is grief that unites them. grief.

nebula

once i saw an episode of star trek

you know the ones with captain picard

and i don't remember exactly

because it was a long time ago

but the enterprise was passing a nebula

and then they heard a distress signal

there was a spaceship caught in the nebula

but they couldn't go in and help it

because they'd get trapped in the nebula too

and then counselor troy the empath

started to hear a voice

This blog concerns everybody on this website and the purpose of the website. I am only using the Israel/Palestine issue as an example. For what it's worth.

The Israel/Palestine issue was very ugly here this week. The "discussion" was as ugly as the conflict itself. .
