Ole!

Flamenco rhythm is extremely precise and complicated. Aficianados listen very critically for the beats (called "compas"). If the musician falters on the beats however slightly or temporarily, he gets dinged for it--no matter his pyrotechnics on the guitar.

Because you can't use a regular metronome to practice the flamenco compas, Iranian-American physicist/musician Maissam Barkeshli and his flamenco guru "El Rubio" have developed an i-phone app to help practice and study the compas.

Ah! The Sweet Delusion of Flamenco!

by bahmani on

For being Iranian, we seem to have an unusually large amount of Flamenco players out there.

I wonder what the sociological link/reason is?

Maybe the combination of degree of difficulty, looking pretty Spanish, and the physical release of un-conflicted passion that Flamenco music offers, is why a lot of Iranian musicians seem to gravitate towards this highly un-Iranian choice of music.
