Sheemee
by Anonymouse on Mon Apr 21, 2008 11:38 AM CDTKimia yani che? As far as I can remember, Kimia means something that is hard to find, rare.
I'd use Sheemee for Chemistry even if it doesn't have a red blooded Farsi or Persian root.
Not everything has to be done in Farsi. Ferdowsi paid his dues. We don't have to call Pizza a nan-e keshi.
Kimia from Amid Farsi dictionary
by Ali A Parsa on Sun Apr 20, 2008 03:06 PM CDTFrom Greek root. Meaning Ekhtelato emtezaj or mixing some materials to produce new ones. In modern chemistry A+B=C (my explanation).
Ancients defined Kimia as a substance by which they could change two substances to get a third one such as producing gold from copper. Of course this was not possible scientifically, but the word remained meaning Magic or Oxir. In Arabic Kimia means Chemistry. In Farsi Kimia also refers to Makr and Heeleh, Manic or sleight of hands or Tardasty.

Kimia
by Peer O'Kachal (not verified) on Sun Apr 20, 2008 06:44 AM CDTKimia means alchemy (arabized form of Kimia)root of the word chemistry. It was an art (wizardry?!) where the "Kimiagar" (the alchemist) used his magic to turn ordinary materials into gold. Of course this is not true, but this gave rise (originated) the science of chemistry, where "kimiagar"s tried to lean how materials are made so that they could turn them into gold.
For us who did not major in Farsi
