"Kheyli seh shod" means something has gone terribly wrong. Where does the word "seh" come from? This saying comes from the Automotive industry where 4 cylinder cars sometimes failed on one cylinder and operated on only 3, so the saying.

Crossing of phone lines
by Anonymous Seh Shod (not verified) on Wed Oct 15, 2008 09:26 PM PDTThis question was asked before and answered correctly on December 1, 2004. I am surprised that a differendt explanation is being awarded here.
Please see here:

The phrase originates from crossing of telephone lines in Tehran when repeated dialing of #3 on rotary phones would cause telephone lines to cross and one could listen to other people's conversation.
Seh Shod

Thanks for your comment. When a 4 cylinder car is reduced to working on 3 it still runs but not well so the saying "seh kar mikoneh". In your case after you are caught checking out honeybunny your relationship with your better half still continues but perhaps not very smoothly.
Ever since the introdution of the motor car to Iran the language picked up many such phrases. More examples are "malidi" or "bepa namali". Also "amper paroundan" or "amper bala raftan".

(I was 'chatting' with 'honeybunny', and my wife walked in. seh shod!) That's SEH!
Mmmm... the engine still operated on three cylinders, despite having a faulty one. If anything, that's sign of a good thing! The engine is sooo solid, it can still operate on 3 cylinders!
If the engine shut down, because the number of cylinders got to THREE, then I guess that would make sense, (and hence, "seh shod") but it got to three, and nothing went horribly wrong!
Just because this is one theory, it does not mean it is the theory and the explanation behind it.
It just sounds too technical for the public to pick up such metaphor, and use it . Any other evidence can be offered to back up this theory?
(Can you tell I have wayyyy too much time on my hands?)
