Ahmad Batebi (2)

PART 2: Student activist interview with VoA after escape from Iran

PART 1 -- PART 2 -- PART 3 -- PART 4 -- PART 5 -- PART 6

Ahmad Batebi gained notoriety for his appearance on the cover of The Economist magazine holding up a bloodied shirt belonging to a fellow student who had been beaten by the Basij paramilitaries. The photo, which has been called "an icon for Iran's student reform movement," was taken during the Iranian Student Protests in July 1999 in Tehran. Following its publishing, Batebi was arrested, tried in closed-door proceedings, found guilty of "creating unrest," and sentenced to death. This was reduced to 10 years after domestic and international outcry.

Fame and Corruption?!

by Nadi (not verified) on

What are you on about?! You do you think you are to pass that sort of judgment so hastily?! Much less a person who clearly has been through a LOT!

I hope he really goes far with this. I think he is really in a position to reveal the crisis in Iran. What kind of suppression we are under.

Good for you Ahmad! No, f@#%ing great for you, and all of us.

Welcome to the $400M club; He will be the shining star! The good opposition stays in Iran and fight. The unfortunate ones fall in the trap of fame and corruption.

I hope this fine young man gets the help he needs.

by Tahirih on

All the pressure he was under and the torture that he endured will rush out in the form of post traumatic stress.I hope people who are close to him and are supportive of him , get the appropriate help for him.

May God bless and protect him, he will be remembered in our history fondly.

Regards,

Tahirih
