Alborz Mountains in Moonlight
Looking back over the past year, the editors of NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) have decided to list 12 of the more memorable images that have been posted to APOD in 2007, including Babak Tafreshi's "Alborz Mountains in Moonlight" [LARGER IMAGE]. Explanation: On January 25th, light from a first quarter Moon illuminated this dreamlike landscape looking across the rugged, snow-covered peaks of the Alborz Mountain Range in northern Iran. The stunning sky is filled with stars, including the yellow-tinged Betelgeuse at the shoulder of Orion. Sirius, alpha star of Canis Major and the brightest star in planet Earth's night, stands above and left of picture center. The posting of this image shows a good taste of Mr. Babak, who spots thoughtful imagination of beautiful stars in the sky amongst the readers of this site.
