The Father of the Modern-Age

For anybody who is interested in understanding the methods in which the "free-world" (ie USA, UK, France, Canada etc) operates, here are some interesting resources regarding the man who single-handedly introduced the idea of having Public Relations (a very sophisticated form of propaganda) to the world.

Edward Louis Bernays (November 22 [1], 1891 [2] – March 9 [3], 1995 [4]) is considered one of the fathers of the field of public relations [5] along with Ivy Lee [6]. Combining the ideas of Gustave Le Bon [7] and Wilfred Trotter [8] on crowd psychology [9] with the psychoanalytical [10] ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud [11], Bernays was one of the first to attempt to manipulate public opinion using the psychology of the subconscious [12].

He felt this manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational [13] and dangerous as a result of the 'herd instinct' that Trotter had described. Adam Curtis [14]'s award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC [15], The Century of the Self [16], pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations.

He was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine [17].[1] [18]
