What is the BEST weight-loss plan?
by Organic NUTritionist
11-Oct-2009

Short and simple advice...

Cabbage soup diet, cookie diet, slim-fast shakes diet, all carb diet, no carb diet, high protein diet, etc., etc....  The best diet is a balanced diet that includes the nutrients that your body needs in order to function and keep you healthy while you try to shed fat.

What is the BEST weight-loss plan?

When evaluating a plan, there are some key questions you should ask:

* Does it claim that you will lose weight quickly?

* Does it promise that you can lose weight and keep it off without giving up any of your favorite foods?

* Does it restrict a single nutrient?

* Does it claim to alter physiology?

* Does it promote miracle cures?

* Does it require a specific food combination?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, be highly skeptical. The chances are great that the diet won't work.

How, then, can you really achieve long-term weight loss? These tips are time-tested and work for most people:

* Plan meals and snacks. Haphazard eating often leads to the consumption of high-calorie foods.

* Eat breakfast every day.

* Pay attention to portion sizes. Get out the measuring cups, spoons, [calorie books] and kitchen scale to see just how much you are eating.

* Limit your intake of refined carbohydrates, like sweets, crackers, and chips.

* Eat whole-grain carbohydrates.

* Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Try to have five to eight servings per day.

* Choose moderate portions (3 to 4 ounces) of lean proteins, and try to eat some protein with each meal. You will feel satisfied longer.

* Keep a food diary.

* Set up your home and work environments for success. Don't bring in problem foods, and make sure healthful foods are available.

* Eat slowly and pay attention to the taste of food.

* Quit eating when you are full.

* Exercise at least 30 minutes five times per week.

* Get proper diet advice from Nutritionists, Naturopathic Doctors, and Dietitians.

Any plan that restricts calories will work in the short run, but if it does not result in a lifestyle change, the pounds lost will come back quickly.

It is possible to lose weight and keep it off, it can definitely be done.  :)

Monda

Dear Organic Nutritionist jan, Thank you...

by Monda on

for your advice on breakfast and daily planning of meals. I will get on it ASAP!

Organic NUTritionist

Kourosh jan,

by Organic NUTritionist on

I usually find that the food-based/organic good quality vitamins are found in health food stores or those that carry more natural products.

Of course, probably they can be found at various other markets and places--you can choose whichever place that has the best price.  :)

Perhaps you misread my question. I did not object to buying Hight quality vitamines. I was wondering why you think people can but those ONLY from those who retail these for a higher price.

Organic NUTritionist

Dear Monda,

by Organic NUTritionist on

First, I'm glad that you resolved your problem of not eating right in the evenings with yoga and it works for you.

Breakfast should not be a huge meal, it should be something light and nutritious to keep you going until lunch.  You should always plan your whole day's meals and snacks and know what you are going to be eating that day.  I usually eat cereal for breakfast (about one cup), I have a piece of bread with cheese mid-morning, a piece of fruit around noon, I eat a pretty good lunch and then a very light dinner (a salad with tuna, sometimes cereal, or a piece of bread with a slice of chicken or turkey).

This is the key to the whole day's meals and snacks:  You should always plan your whole day's meals and snacks and know what you are going to be eating that day.

Dear Kourosh,

Good question about why buy quality vitamins.  Please see my latest blog about this subject:

Why do you place such an emphasis on buying vitamine pills from Hight quality stores? Would that mean other retailers, are shortchanging their customers?

At those stores, all you are doing is paying at least twice more for the exact same thing you can get at Target or Walmart.

It really should not make any difference.

Thanks for your sensible advice here!

by Monda on

I especially like your reminder of:  "Just eating less depends on what you are eating less of.."

For me carbs in the later part of afternoon or evening are big problems, plus the fact that I'm not a big breakfast-eater. To help myself with carbs issue I've started going to my yoga classes in the evenings instead of early mornings. I find that it's hard for me to think about overeating after a nice session of stretch & exercise. I'm sleeping much better.

The other problem of not eating a good breakfast - I have not figured out how not to drink coffee and actually sit down to eat breakfast rather than munch on a banana or cereal bar while at work. I mean even on my days off when I don't have to be anywhere at a certain time, I cannot get myself to sit down and enjoy a good breakfast unless I'm at a coffee shop or restaurant. Any suggestions with this issue?

Thank you for your blog and thank you for answering my question. It is super kind of you to write such a long post. I am pretty sure you are busy with your day job. I have copied and saved your blog plus your post for me. I will try to put them into practice and live a healthful life! I truly enjoyed reading other people's posts also 'cause all of them are better than me & they eat right and they are diet-conscious. I never exercise and get addicted to IC, it is pretty bad! I will start to do some exercise and try to prolong my life-span a little!

thanks,

yolanda

Abarmard

I take them

by Abarmard on

I am not over weight, but want to be fit. I have noticed a nice change since I have been taking them. As I understand they don't have any side effects...my metabolism has increased for sure ;)

Thanks again for your help. It's great to have you here.

Organic NUTritionist

Dear Abarmard,

by Organic NUTritionist on

Thanks for clarifying about the cake!  You see where my mind is!  I'm not always perfect, but I try!  :)

As for your supplements, they are all wonderful but is there a specific reason that you are taking them?

Recently, I saw studies about CLA's ability to promote the body's natural fat metabolism.  Some take fucoxanthin for weight loss, diabetes or cancer.

I am all for vitamin supplementation but only if you need it for a specific deficiency or if you think that you are not getting enough of a certain nutrient through diet alone.  :)

Abarmard

Dear Organic NUTritionist

by Abarmard on

Thank you for your advice. I will try to do as you have suggested.

Just to clarify, I do take a piece of dark choc and not the cake :)

I am not sure if I do need the multi vitamin everyday, but I do take them every day, the multi vitamin is food based. I don't eat fish, that's why I take 2 fish oil capsules.

I have treadmill and always ran for many many years, except last 8 months that I have been tired and busy. Planning to start again this week, actually tomorrow morning.

I have also started on Super CLA and  fucoxanthin, what do you know about them?

Thanks again for your help

Take the "nutricious" out of your daily plan and it sounds just like mine.  :-0

Organic NUTritionist

Dear Che,

by Organic NUTritionist on

I understand you, I used to be the same way.

The solution is to eat the proper amount of food every few hours and you will never feel that way again.

By "proper" I mean the quality and the amount--nutritious breakfast, nutritious morning snack, nutritious lunch, nutritious afternoon snack, a nutritious dinner, and a night time nutritious snack (optional).

:)

ON... why is it that when you start eating breakfast (when you don't usually), you're HUNGRIER than usual?  By lunch time, I'm starving if I eat breakfast!

Organic NUTritionist

Dear Abarmard

by Organic NUTritionist on

Oatmeal is great.  But do you really need all the supplements that you are taking, seems like you eat healthy enough.  I would take the vitamins every other day if you really want to continue.

You say you buy all organics THAT IS GREAT.  I hope that your vitamins are also bought at high quality nutrition/health stores because that makes a difference too.

I would eat a bigger more substantial lunch with more protein (fish, meat, chicken, etc.) and a good potato, brown rice, whole wheat pasta or breads and veggies.

Substitute what you eat for lunch now for your dinner with no dressing (lemon juice, vinegar or salsas that have no fat are ok).

This way you are not so hungry at night and a salad would be sufficient.

I would substitute the chocolate cake with one small piece of organic chocolate (like Green and Black Organic Chocolate).

Bananas have too many calories, apples are better.

To prevent hold-ups on exercising, buy a treadmill it is the best exercise equipment investment.

Abarmard

Dear Organic NUTritionist

by Abarmard on

I start my day by a bowl of oatmeal along with multi vitamin

lunch (weekdays) I eat mix greens with mushrooms, beans (3-4 veriety), tomatoes, beats, cauliflower, Broccoli, with little Italian dressing and tons of red hot. I drink low sodium v8 along.

afternoon snack, I have my tea with a piece of dark chocolate. fish oils, CoQ10, garlic pills

Before heading home I eat an apple and banana.

Once I get home is the problem. I don't eat bad, just sometimes over eat.

I normally run or do some sort of exercise, yet these days that's on hold.

I don't (usually) eat or buy anything non-organic.

Organic NUTritionist

Dear Yolanda,

by Organic NUTritionist on

Protein examples are:

meat, poultry, fish, legumes (which includes soy) and nuts and seeds.

Here is good information from webmd.com:

Good Protein

Protein can help you shed those unwanted pounds and keep your belly full.
But it's important to eat the right amount and the right kind of protein to get
the health benefits.

Seafood is one of the best sources of protein because it's usually low in
fat. Fish such as salmon is a little higher in fat but it is the heart-healthy
kind: omega-3 fatty acids.

Soy

Twenty five grams of soy protein daily can help lower cholesterol and reduce
the risk of heart disease. Combine soy protein foods like tofu with a healthy
low fat diet.

Beans

One-half cup of beans contains as much protein as three ounces of broiled
steak. Plus, these nutritious nuggets are loaded with fiber to keep you feeling
full for hours.

White-Meat Poultry

Stick to the white meat of poultry for excellent, lean protein. Dark meat is
higher in fat. The skin is loaded with saturated fat, so remove skin before
cooking.

Milk, Cheese, and Yogurt

Not only are dairy foods -- like milk, cheese, and yogurt -- excellent
sources of protein but they also contain valuable calcium. Choose skim or low
fat dairy to keep bones and teeth strong, prevent osteoporosis, and enhance
weight loss.

Eggs

Eggs are one of the least expensive forms of protein. The American Heart
Association says normal healthy adults can safely enjoy an egg a day.

Pork Tenderloin

This great and versatile white meat is 31% leaner than 20 years ago.

Lean Beef

Lean beef has only one more gram of saturated fat than a skinless chicken
breast. Lean beef is also an excellent source of zinc, iron, and vitamin
B12.

Protein on the Go

Grab a meal replacement drink, cereal bar, or energy bar. Check the label to
be sure the product contains at least six grams of protein, and is low in sugar
and fat

Thank you for your blog! It is very concise, practical, and functional! I also like the beautiful accompanying picture! I have a question, you mentioned "protein", does protein refer to meat or soybeans?

I will definitely read your blog over & over, and put it into practice!

Detective Sam,

Your regimen and diet plan cracked me up (cigarettes in every meal, OMG)! You seem to be very excited about your diet plan. It is funny that you use "tons" to quantify the portions! LOL! It sounds very dramatic! I like everything about your plan except the cigarettes, but please don't worry about what I say, I am absolutely nobody here! I am one of the least important people on this planet!..... It is amazing that you have had the same weight since you were 18 years old. Great job!......

thanks,

I like SamSam's diet.  Tonight I had 4 Stellas and 3 cigarettes.  I fed my family a nutritious meal of adas polo and morgh though.  Does that count?  I should have ate the adas polo.  I think the empty 1200 calories of Stella went straight to my Iranian ass:)

learned since college days that I hate liquor & rarely drink bear and hate grass . Never ever keep alcohol at home except may be for the odd female alcoholic visitor or bar scene. So yes alcohol is fattening & grass gives you constipation which absorb every ounce of fat from your munchies(is this another hoax by me or scientifically true). Your stress info was eye opening though , & this Dr Hyman dude looks like a fit & slim chap himself unlike Dr phil(pheeel or fill :)thx.

& RW is absolutly right. less intake = less storage

Cheers & thx for the usefull advice !!!

Organic NUTritionist

Dear SS

by Organic NUTritionist on

LOL !  :)  Good one!  You made me smile!  :)

I must say, though, for most people, according to Dr. Mark Hyman, stress can increase body fat even if you eat well and get regular exercise.

When you are stressed, the body produces a hormone called cortisol. This increases your blood sugar and insulin levels, slows fat burning, and increases inflammation, leading to weight gain around the middle.

Chronically high levels of cortisol make you less sensitive to the hormone leptin (which plays a role in body weight regulation by acting on the hypothalamus to suppress appetite), so your appetite is increased and you gain weight.

Persistent stress can also cause insomnia, which leads to further weight gain.

You do have some good habits, heavy workout, soccer, lemon, lots of fruits and veggies, i would try and cut back on the coffee (substitute some for herbal teas--there are so many great varieties out there) and definitely ditch the cigs...  :o

:)

Dear ON

by SamSamIIII on

I,m not a weight specialist but I have the same waist size as when I was 18, the same weight & almost the same figure. Now my dear that gives me the authority to give you my weight control recepie which is as follows for the last 20 yrs;

Mid morning; more cigaretes, more regular coffee

Afternoon after work; Heavy workout, soccer, cigarrete afterward..home , kid & social chores..

Dinner; Tons and tons of fruites, tons of food, greasy or non greasy lottsa vegies & lottsa lemon, deserts, tons of fruites again , & again cigarretes

So as you see I have discovered thru practice that Lemon breaks the fat, coffee hyper activate your system and burn energy, offcourse exercise is a factor & veggies too. And dont forget stress, that helps with weight loss too...So thats my secret for my good figure & good looks.
