..."This "Mystery City" was later identified as the Bakken Oil Field. The huge amount of light given off constantly in the area is due to natural gas flares. These flaming discharges are used at oil fields to keep equipment from being overpressured, which was essentially the cause of the BP blow-out in the Gulf.

The Bakken is reportedly one of the largest oil fields in the world, covering about 200,000 square miles in North Dakota, Montana and Canada. The latest estimates place the total reserves, recoverable and non-recoverable with today's technology, at between 18 and 24 billion barrels.

Estimates continued to rise once rock fracturing technology became available in 2008. This has caused a boom in Bakken oil production. By the end of 2010 oil production rates had reached 458,000 barrels per day -- outstripping the capacity to ship the oil out of the area.

In 2011, one of the private owners of the United States' oil declared that the "Bakken play ... could be the world'™s largest discovery in the last 30 to 40 years" -- yielding as much as 24 billion barrels. Since 2008, approximately 1,800 wells are added yearly.
