(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The former director of the program of political Islam in the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Emil Nakhle stressed that the Saudi policies in Bahrain and Yemen might drag the West into a new war in the region, either as a result of a direct conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran, or conflicts between the Sunnis and the Shiites in the region, which might extend to Kuwait and the UAE as well.

He emphasized that on the long-term there would be a more serious problematic standing behind the escalating crises currently taking place in both Libya and Syria, which is represented in the West’s absolute support to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Thus, he stressed the need to reconsider the alliance of oil-for-stability, regarding the West’s relations with Saudi Arabia.

Nakhle, in his article about the West’s relations with Saudi Arabia in light of the Arab spring, which was published in the British “Financial Times” newspaper, highlighted the fact that the West cares about the oil of Saudi Arabia, the largest OPEC producer, but the role of Saudi Arabia harms the balance of power in the region, and could drag the West into future conflicts.

Emil Nakhle said: “Adhering to the oil-for-support seems to be harming our interests in the region, especially in the war against religious extremism and terrorism”.
