The inaugural Taste of Iran food festival was a success despite little support from local businesses said Farvardin Cultural Centre coordinator and organizer of the event Saeed Soltanpour.

Soltanpour said over 3,000 people passed through the all-day event tthat took place at Mel Lastman Square last Saturday. Municipal restrictions on food preparation prevented many of the vendors from offering some of the authentic Persian dishes. The inability to drive into the venue after 12 noon was an added difficulty as well said Soltanpour.

“Because it was the first year and lack of support from businesses, we couldn’t provide a wide variety of food for people including non-Iranians, but for the first year it was successful,” said Soltanpour.

Aside from the restrictions, Taste of Iran accomplished what it aimed to by celebrating culture and heritage with music, food and dance. The theme of the event was “Youth Appreciation” where several Iranian-Canadian youth were recognized for lofty achievements.

Among the youth congratulated were swimmer Kourosh Ahani, karate medalist Goli Khalili, karate champion Saeed Baghbani and badminton champion Saman Mahmoudzadeh.

Iranian and Indian music played throughout the day by musicians such as Shahab, Milad, DJ Bliss and Ayar Dance Group. Soltanpour said he is excited to expand and become a bigger and better venue for next year’s festival.
