Bisotun inscription to undergo laser scanning for the first time

team of German experts are scheduled to use a 3D laser scanner to locate damage to the Achaemenid site of Bisotun in Iran. Bisotun, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in western Iran, 30 kilometres east of the provincial capital Kermanshah, at the foot of the Zagros Mountains.

Director of Bisotun Cultural Heritage Centre, Hassan Ra’ei said that the laser scan results will enable supplementary study of the inscription and will be used to make a replica of the bas-relief. He went on to explain that a German team had been brought in to carry out the laser scanning because the country lacked the proper equipment and expertise for this type of work.

although tectonic pressure had caused numerous cracks in the rock bearing the inscriptions and bas-relief, rainfall is the major factor threatening the site
