The Iranian capital Tehran was named the third best city in the world in terms of its transport system at the Sustainable Transport Award ceremony, which has held in Washington D.C. on Monday.
Guangzhou, the capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, won the award for the world’s best transport system. Leon in Mexico, Nantes in France, and Lima in Peru ranked second, fourth, and fifth respectively.
The Tehran transport system includes wide tree-lined bicycle lanes as well as a high-quality bus network which links with the city’s rail network, according to the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).
The ITDP is an international nonprofit organization that assists cities to reduce greenhouse gases and improve the quality of urban life.
Tehran City Councilman Alireza Dabir was Iran’s representative at the ceremony.
Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf also addressed the conference through a video link.
“Today, in the metropolis of Tehran, despite all the obstacles and limitations, the development of the metro network, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, and bus lines has been realized,” Qalibaf stated. He also said Iran is ready to share its experiences in the area of transport with other countries.

Corrupt to the core.
by No Fear on Wed Jan 26, 2011 01:03 PM PSTAhmadinejad has every right to ask for their financial books if they want more funds from the government. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly complained about Metro's finances and has said with the amount of money that has been spent on our metro up to now, we could have bought the most luxurious system from abroad.
Corruption in Tehran Metro is well known to inner circles in Iran. Many of the contracting companies who are involved in building metro tunnels are close to Hashemi Rafsanjani who is Ahmadinejad political rival. Rafsanjani's son, Mehdi Hashemi holds the highest position in tehran metro co. His position was not appointed by the government nor it was elected. It was given by a city council who were all Rafsanjan's allies.

by yolanda on Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:38 PM PSTI am glad to hear that Tehran ranks #3 in the world for the transport system......but I don't understand why Iran ranks #1 in the world for death from traffic accidents:
http://www.healthmetricsandevaluation.org/resources/news/2009/irans_death_rate_highlights_0509.html
420 got killed from traffic accdients during Nowruz:
http://edition.presstv.ir/detail/90445.html
Can they reduce the death from traffic accidents also? otherwise, the death toll from traffic accidents overshadows and eclipses their accomplishment in tranport system!

MADLY LOVING THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF DEATH
by Ayatoilet on Wed Jan 26, 2011 09:47 AM PSTThe fact is that Tehran's underground public transportation was planned and started before the Islamic revolution of death. Iran hater and butcher Khomeini interrupted the work. Plans and blueprints for Tehran Metro were conceptualized ten times bigger than what you see today, and should have been operational two decades ago. What you see today is ONE TENTH of what was planned and what you see done today had its blue prints made in the early 1970s. Check the facts, do not be blinded by a prejudiced view of everything, simply check the facts. By the way, Tehran already had a bus system established in the 1920s. Even the so called "Imam Khomeini" airport which ended up being a disgrace worldwide, due to faulty tarmac construction and shortage of terminal lavatories, was planned 40 years ago and by the way, it is also only 10% of the size originally envisioned. Check the facts. An example of what IRI is capable of is operation of airlines, they should get first prize in unsafe airlines. How about the construction of a nuclear plant, that seems to be taking more time to build than the Egyptian pyramids. Iran hating IRI sold the Caspian Sea to the highest foreign bidder and its neighboring countries and now BP is making hundreds of billions of dollars per week from formerly Iranian Caspian territory and resources. It is futile to blab about opposition being "Iran Haters" it is not simple anymore to repeat lies to fool people, you folks have been established as fools and liars, you are the only Iran haters who live and you are in madly in an amorous relationship with a doctrine of lies, superstition and hate. Islamic republic of death is the real Iran hater; Genghiz and Alexander come as distant runner-ups. Islamic republic of death and hate is the undisputed champion in murder; check the facts.
