TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced on Saturday that the individual who tried to hijack an Iranian plane en route to Damascus last night was an affiliate of anti-revolutionary groups.

"An individual with known identity who is an affiliate of anti-revolutionary groups intended to hijack an Iran Air flight from Tehran to Damascus last night," IRGC's public relations office announced in a statement minutes ago.

The statement added that the attempted hijack of the Iranian plane was foiled thanks to the decisive and prompt action of the IRGC's air marshals.

The statement added that the handcuffed hijacker and his case have now been handed to the judiciary officials for legal procedures.

Earlier this morning, FNA reported that Iranian security forces had foiled an attempted hijack of a plane bound for the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The plane en route from Tehran to Damascus landed safely at the Syrian capital's airport after the man threatening to hijack the airliner was arrested by the security personnel on board.

The Iranian man equipped with a cold weapon claimed that he had planted bombs on the airplane, saying he was going to hijack the airliner.
