On July 29, 2010, Provincial Court Judge Cathy Mocha sentenced Mahmoud Yadegari to 20 months in prison.
In theory, the Iranian-Canadian could have received consecutive sentences that totaled a maximum of 70 years.
On July 6, 2010, the fraudster and illegal exporter of controlled devices had been convicted on 9 charges. These include offenses under Canadian legislation including the Customs Act, Export and Import Permits Act, Criminal Code and the highly sensitive Nuclear Safety and Control Act.
Yadegari’s attempt to export restricted nuclear-related products without the proper licensing also violated top-level United Nations resolutions against Iran.
But not even federal prosecutor Bradley Reitz expected Yadegari to be issued consecutive sentences that would keep him in jail for the rest of his life.
Prosecution had asked for a total sentence of 78 months (6.5 years).
