The Cleric Who Changed: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, was not always deeply conservative

Khamenei was known as an untraditional cleric.  He was by no means "conservative".  He was reputed to be a "leftist" cleric and many of those leftist clerics are today's "reformers".  Somehow or for some reason he has changed or is pretending to be what he is not.  Is he scared of an IRGC take over and is such tries to mollify them?  This article attests to his non-conservative past.
