Iran hopes to boost its domestic gasoline
production -- a weak spot that international sanctions could target --
with new refinery facilities due to come on line this year, an energy
official said on Sunday.
"The cat cracker project at Abadan oil
refinery and the first phase of Shazand oil refinery in Arak will be
commissioned next year," managing director of the National Iranian
Refining and Distribution Co. Noureddin Shahnazi told news agency Mehr.
By next year, Shahnazi meant the Iranian
new year which begins on March 21. He said the two facilities would
raise gasoline production by 11.6 million litres per day.
Shahnazi has said before that expansion
plans at five Iranian refineries would produce 13 million litres a day
within two years.
Iran is the world's fifth-largest oil
exporter but it must import 40 percent of its gasoline to meet domestic
demand because of a lack of refining capacity.
This has burdened the country's budget
and also makes Iran more vulnerable to any punitive measures that
targets trade.
The United States and its allies want
sanctions on Iran over its nuclear energy programme which they fear
could produce nuclear weapons. Tehran denies any such intention.
