JERUSALEM, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Visiting German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Tuesday that Berlin supports Israel in respect to the Iranian nuclear program.
Westerwelle, who arrived in Israel Monday evening, made the remarks at a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman.
The top German diplomat said he has stressed his country does not accept Iran's nuclear armament during a visit to the White House and noted there is a limit to Berlin's tolerance on the issue.
All the world's nations are concerned with the issue, added Westerwelle, expressing hope that the crisis would be solved diplomatically.
According to Westerwelle, aggravated sanctions will be considered should Iran not withdraw its nuclear program and talks fail.
On Tuesday, Westerwelle also met in Jerusalem with Israeli President Shimon Peres and the two discussed the Iranian issue.
Peres told Westerwelle that it was "unacceptable" for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to go around calling for the destruction of a country.
"It was absolutely clear that nuclear weapons in the hands of the government of Iran is not acceptable," Westerwelle was quoted by local daily The Jerusalem Post as telling Peres.
