The United States is opposed to enacting a new set of financial sanctions against Iran that are due to be discussed in the G8 summit next week, diplomatic officials in New York reported Friday. According to officials, sanctions against Iran are expected to top the G8's agenda. Sources are also predicting a pointed debate between the heads of the industrialized nations over an appropriate response to Iranian authorities' suppression of reformist demonstrations in Iran led by Mir Hossein Mousavi and other Iranian opposition leaders.

I remember..

when I first came here end '07 under the Bushies sanctions was a big issue. Well that was a different ball game and at that time with all the other frightful military options truly on the table, it was kind of a centerist position, albeit not an overwhelmingly popular one. Rashiddian was the most vocal advocate and. it was debated a lot. I did not think it was a good idea. People kept warning about it, using the terrible deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children as the parallel. I don't know what the particular economic and political determinants are that make Iran sooo different from Iraq, but I feel Ostaad is on target--that it would just be a squeeze on the middle claws and would dishearten them and play into the hands of the regime.

Generally speaking, it seems to me by now that sanctions will always play into the hands of a repressive regime, in other words, they backfire.

And again, I believe Russia is also against the sanctions. They know something, those Russians, don't you think so? They are highly pragmatic.  And ultimately pragmatism will be the decisive factor..beecauusse...

since yesterday I have been trying to ferret out from three different sources including press tv. what the hell is going on with this Nabucco gas deal. I bet Ostaad knows every bit under a microscope. lol . Press TV is announcing the deal with the Europeans will be closed any day now, BBC (???) says it is on hold due to the current political crisis. Be that as it may, it seemed that sooner rather than later Central Europe is going to need the gas, so what sanctions?

In other words..smoke and mirrors, I guess.

How'm I doing Ostaad, a little better?

And you, Ayhab, you know you are the one who convinced me to come back here before the elections. I am really glad you did!

Sanctions be sanctions

by Ostaad on

If I'm not mistaken, somebody in DC is talking to somebody in Tehran right this minute! The rest is smoke and mirrors.

My motto has always been "sanction be sanction". These counter productive sanctions no nothing but ensuring the Iranian middle class stays under the mollah's thumb economically speaking. Obama should remove the sanctions publicly and rescind the covert ops ordered by GW quietly. Robert Gates the covert ops master, who was kept precisely because HE knows what's going on under the radar in regards to Iran, is the perfect official to send a cease and decease order for these illegal ops funded to the tune of $400 million, $75 million of which publicly announced by the congress.

Why should the sanctions go, you might ask? Because without sanctions private economy will grow and the very groups of Iranians who are risking everything by standing up to the regime will have a chance to keep making a living. Iranians will not put themselves in the same situation the Iraqis are. The regime knows that and it uses the sanctions as a chain around the necks of the Iranian middle class. The US and the West must ensure there will be an economic hirozon available to the Iranians who oppose this regime.  Removing sanctions are the best way to start that process.
