Years of scrounging and vagrancy on the streets of Shahr-e Kord in western Iran meant that Talat Habibian was never anything more than a local beggar to his neighbours.
So when he was found dead in his squalid home, no one suspected that the dishevelled tramp who spent his life pleading for money and favours had left behind a vast fortune.

kudo's to you and yours
by anonymous fish on Fri Mar 27, 2009 03:07 PM PDTi'm more jaded than that. i see absolutely zero benefit to either the begger or myself in that particular situation. i have offered my time and money and physical help and will do so until i'm blowin' in the wind but i will not indulge in or encourage any practice that involves someone standing on the road with a sign saying "give me money, i'm too lazy to look for a job". buy a lawnmover and walk the neighborhood with a sign... it worked for my son when he wanted to buy something and i wouldn't just give him money. does that make me sound heartless? i hope not. i am extremely generous to the young kids trying to earn a few bucks to buy a soccer ball (or maybe a $100.00 pair of nikes... whatever..:-) i'm extremely generous to any service worker whose performance determines his income. i don't know. it's a matter of pride. all i can think of is my dad seeing me do something like that myself and the ass-whippin' i'd get for lack of pride or incentive.
but... good for you. makes up for stringy people like me. :-)
tell you
by capt_ayhab on Fri Mar 27, 2009 02:13 PM PDTmy baby is like, anytime we are out, if we see 10 beggars, she will give them all money. That is just the way she is.
I have mixed feelings myself. I know I might sound pompous by saying this, but[we] do a lot of volunteer work, either in the mission, or in battered woman's shelter.
I am guilty of helping the ones who stand by the street corners. Unless I think that they are going to use it to buy alcohol.

see!
by anonymous fish on Fri Mar 27, 2009 01:52 PM PDTthat's what kills me. i never ever give money to beggers. EVER. there was a scam... probably still going on everywhere in the world... of the family at the interstate rest stop. car broke down... just lost job... on the way to florida to live with the in-laws... or maryland to find a promised job. they move from rest area to rest area. i remember years ago... 20 or more... when the po-lice cracked down on them. but good grief. like that stopped anyone. they crop up like weeds. and i hate weeds...:-)
a personal little beef of azizam's. we're sitting out on the front porch having a smoke. at least 25% of the people walking by ask for a spare cigarette. i'm from the south... we're friendly people... but damn if i don't avoid looking people in the eye anymore cause it's going to prompt a hand-out. swear to god. you give someone a pleasant "hi there... nice day" and it opens the door for a beg for a guarter.
no. i won't be intimidated anymore. i will NOT change MY optimism for the sake of some few pathetic losers... :-)))

by capt_ayhab on Fri Mar 27, 2009 01:11 PM PDTFew years ago, there was a time that I used to travel to Dallas at least once a week.
At the corner of one of the upper class streets, near University Park[SMU] there used to stand this guy with a sign that read[will work for food]. Believe or not, I did pay him few dollars here and there.
One day, after 3 or 4 weeks of absence from Dallas, a friend and I were passing the same street corner and the man was not there. I asked the friend where a bouts of the man, his answer shocked the dickens out of me.
He said that the cops had picked up the guy, and later on they had discovered that he has close to $70,000 cash at his house, and a bank account with close to $250,000.
