Islamic courts started to function in northwestern Pakistan's restive Swat valley on Thursday. Qazis, or judges, started presiding over courts in four places in Swat valley to pacify the armed Taliban fighters, who fought fierce battle against the security forces over the past 18 months, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported. The Islamic courts were set up under an agreement signed last month by a cleric and the provincial government of North West Frontier Province, a senior official said.  Sufi Muhammad, the founding chief of the banned outfit Tehrik Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM), struck a deal with NWFP to set up Islamic courts and enforce Shariat. The areas where Islamic courts functioned included Matta, Khwazakhela, Kabal and Barikot, according to the NNI.

Does this mean

now we are going to be witnessing public hanging of teenagers, stoneing women to death, chopping arms and limbs, women covered from head to toe, closure of any seular schools and all the goodies that come from islamists take over?

Pakistan is a mess: 150-200 million poor people with not much of a prospect. So much ethnic tensions that sooner or later it will disintegerate. If that happens, millions of refugees will pour into Iran. it will make afghan refugee crisis look a like a picnic! This will change the deomgarphic of Iran for ever which will open another pandora box.  One of the good things Iran used to do at time of the evil shah was to help pakistan. but now we are so focused in Gaza , palestine  and southern lebenon, my fear is no body paying attention to this till it's too late....

This is very serious

As Pakistan’s largely corrupt and discredited politicians bicker among themselves to retain what little power they have, the fanatics of all shapes and sizes, with the Pakistani Taliban at the forefront, are bit by bit taking over the country.

The nightmare scenario is that if this state of affairs continues, pretty soon we could end up having the Pakistani equivalent of Mullah Omar with his grubby fingers on Pakistan's Nukes button.
