Iran First Country to Oppose ICC Ruling against Sudan

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran was the first country opposing the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Sudanese President Umar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, Iranian parliament speaker said.

Speaking to reporters upon his return from a daylong visit to Khartoum on Saturday, Ali Larijani referred to the ICC ruling against al-Bashir issued with the support of some western countries, and said the era of adventurism against the world Muslims is over.

He condemned the verdict against the Sudanese president as illegal, and said it violates norms and standards of international laws.

Larijani said his visit to Sudan aimed to express support for al-Bashir, adding that in his talks with the Sudanese president, the latter stressed his strong support for Palestine.

The Iranian top lawmaker arrived in Khartoum on March 6 at the head of a diplomatic-parliamentary delegation to show Iranian nation's support for Sudan.

The Hague-based tribunal has issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo holds Bashir responsible for the six-year conflict in Darfur, which the UN says has left 35,000 people killed.

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also condemned the ICC warrant on Wednesday.
